Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation, but desirable at GS‑6 or above.
May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees who meet criteria.
Grade Determinations: Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) GS‑8 (a) Experience required.
At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level and full KSAs at that level.
Experience providing knowledge of advanced specialized procedures, pharmacology, acute disorders, organ effects, and treatment methods.
Demonstrated Knowledge – Skills – and Abilities for KSAs 1‑4 at all positions at this level; KSAs 5 and 6 used per assignment.
KSAs 1–4: Knowledge of pharmacology, briefing and orientation to hospital staff, knowledge of acute disorders and their effects, and ability to perform complex procedures such as SAECG, tilt‑table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring.
*KSAs 5 and 6 (as needed): Staff development and training, and employee management.
Preferred Experience: Certification (BCLS and ACLS desirable, though not required). Experience with EKG, treadmill, and Holter Monitor strongly preferred.
Duties
Independently perform the full range of electrocardiograph procedures and related examinations, including applying ambulatory monitoring devices, scanning Holter tapes, editing EKG and Holter reports.
Utilize the exercise tolerance testing system and operate diagnostic medical equipment as part of patient treatment, supporting registered nurses and physicians.
Receive requests and/or consults for procedures.
Instruct patients pre‑procedure to ensure understanding and cooperation.
Explain procedural details, necessary positions, monitoring equipment, and adverse reaction expectations.
Educate on accurate monitoring and the importance of diary entries.
Answer patient and family questions.
Perform Medical Instrument Technician duties in stress test specialty, including operating and supervising specialized equipment.
Perform MIT duties in Holter/Event Monitoring specialty, operating and instructing in Holter and event monitoring equipment.
Revise data, complete reports for physician review, and schedule patients for monitor application and removal.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Compensation & Benefits
Job at GS‑8; salary determined by grade and may be increased for higher qualifications or special needs.

Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days annually (13‑26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays).
