Summary
The Anesthesia Medical Instrument Technician (GS-0649-8) provides comprehensive logistical and technical support to anesthesia personnel during routine and complex procedures. The incumbent is responsible for preparing, operating, and maintaining anesthesia equipment and related supplies for procedures requiring both invasive and non‑invasive monitoring. Duties include assembly, disassembly, cleaning, sterilization, calibration, and troubleshooting of anesthesia equipment.

United States Citizenship: Must be US Citizen

Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy

English language proficiency – spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005

No specific educational requirements for this occupation

Licensure or certification is not required, though it is strongly desirable as evidence of essential knowledge, skills, and abilities

Desired certifications include Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS). Documents must be submitted with the application.

GS-8 full performance level: at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level demonstrating the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Knowledge of the correct use of invasive patient monitoring equipment specific to anesthesiology

Knowledge of basic electrocardiography (EKG)

Skill and ability to troubleshoot equipment while the patient is anesthetized

Skill and ability to maintain sterility during procedures

Knowledge of arterial pressure line waveforms and ability to recognize normal and abnormal patterns

Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies, medications, and equipment appropriate to more complex procedures in inpatient settings

Preferred experience: Certified by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT)

Physical requirements: ability to lift and carry items under 15 pounds; fine finger dexterity; use of both hands and legs; walking, standing, and repeated bending; good vision 20/20; hearing acceptable with hearing aids if needed; mental and emotional stability; daily computer use

Responsibilities

Demonstrates advanced knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, particularly cardiac and pulmonary systems, and basic electrocardiography (EKG)

Interprets anesthesia provider orders and assists with documentation of hemodynamic data

Interacts appropriately with patients during anesthetic procedures and applies infection control practices to prevent transmission of pathogens

Maintains sterile techniques when handling and maintaining sterile equipment

Manages anesthesia equipment operation, calibration, and functionality, and supplies required for routine and complex procedures

Prepares, cleans, and stocks anesthesia carts and machines, maintains inventory of invasive and non‑invasive monitoring equipment, and ensures availability of supplies and medications for challenging cases

Troubleshoots anesthesia equipment while the patient is anesthetized and accurately interprets arterial pressure waveforms to alert providers to potential life‑threatening situations

Maintains reusable medical equipment in accordance with VA standards and infection control guidelines

Ensures proper reprocessing and functionality of anesthesia‑related equipment and supplies, including calibration and operation of non‑invasive monitoring systems

Assists anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) under general supervision, exercising independent judgment in technical duties

Work schedule: Monday‑Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

Recruitment incentive: not authorized; payment: competitive salary with possible step increase for higher qualifications
