Overview

The Department of Ecology is hiring an

Maintenance Mechanic 2

within the

Administrative Services Division .
Location:

Eastern Region Office in Spokane, WA
Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
Schedule

This position is required to work in the office five days per week and is not eligible for telework.
Flexible/compressed schedule options may be available after completion of initial onboarding and training.
Duties

Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance needs of the Eastern Regional office, including monitoring and first line management of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
Regular evaluation of building controls to ensure the building remains fully functional.
Coordinate with the facilities team to source outside vendors for issues beyond scope or capability.
Respond to issues identified by building staff.
May travel to other Ecology facilities as needed; non-overnight travel up to ~4 times per year, with overnight travel once per year.
This role provides an opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in troubleshooting and all aspects of facility maintenance.
What You Will Do

Monitor building systems daily and respond to discrepancies in performance (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, access control, and EV charging equipment).
Inspect building grounds, including the main building, parking lots, and annex.
Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on building equipment.
Perform grounds maintenance, including snow removal as required.
Schedule and coordinate on-site work carried out by outside vendors.
Provide occasional support to the facilities team at other Ecology sites (e.g., Central Region Office in Union Gap and Richland Field Office in Richland).
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Four years of experience and/or education in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
Competencies
Facilities Maintenance and Repair Knowledge – knowledge of commercial building systems and the ability to perform routine and complex repairs.
Building Systems Troubleshooting – diagnosing and repairing HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life-safety, and other non-IT building systems.
Building Automation System Operation – operating and troubleshooting building automation systems to maintain facility performance.
General Construction and Carpentry – framing, drywall installation and finishing, painting, concrete work, and office reconfiguration.
Vendor Coordination – scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring contractors; verifying work completion; ensuring timelines and specifications.
Technical Documentation & Records Management – maintaining work orders, maintenance logs, inspections, and electronic records per agency rules.
Tools, Equipment, and Maintenance Technology – proficiency with hand/power tools and related software.
Independent Work Management & Problem Solving – prioritizing work and resolving facility problems safely and professionally.
Education

– College, vocational, trade, or apprenticeship program in facilities maintenance, mechanical or electrical engineering, or related field.
Examples Of Qualifying Education
An associate degree fulfills two years of the required experience.
Certifications listed qualify for additional experience: Building Care and Maintenance Certificate, Maintenance Technician I/II, EPA 608, OSHA 10, etc.
Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications

Experience with preventative maintenance programs.
Knowledge of fire alarm and fire suppression systems and testing procedures.
Hazardous materials handling and safe disposal.
Material storage and inventory control.
Understanding of building-related emergency response procedures.
