Mechanical Builder-Engineer (Early Career) - Bristol, CT
New England Machine Tools, Inc., Somerset, MA, United States
New England Machine Tools, Inc. designs and builds custom CNC grinding machines and automation systems, and its engineering roles are structured around full-lifecycle mechanical design, CAD ownership, BOM and documentation control, and close coordination with production and assembly. The company’s Bristol, Connecticut location and on-site engineering model support close collaboration between design engineers, builders, and technicians during assembly, checkout, and product improvement work.
Role Description
New England Machine Tools, Inc. is hiring an early-career Mechanical Builder-Engineer for our Bristol, CT facility. This role is for someone who wants more than a steady desk job. It is a strong fit for a recent or early-career mechanical engineering professional who wants to build real machines, move fast, work directly with company leadership, and grow into broad technical ownership early in their career.
What you will do
Create and update 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and bills of materials in Autodesk Inventor for custom machines, design improvements, and new product ideas
Build, adjust, debug, and improve machine hardware on the shop floor alongside builders and technicians
Work directly with company leadership on customer solutioning, proposal concepts, rough configurations, and technical input for quotations and feasibility discussions
Contribute to internal product development by exploring new machine features, mechanisms, options, and related product ideas in parallel with customer work
Support active project delivery by helping solve design and build issues quickly during assembly, checkout, and release
Help establish and improve best practices in design, documentation, and the practical use of modern tools, including AI-assisted workflows where they can make engineering faster and better
What we are looking for
BS in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field, or graduation coming soon;
0–2 years of relevant experience
(internships, co‑ops, projects, or early full‑time roles)
Hands‑on experience with
Autodesk Inventor
through coursework, projects, internships, or co‑ops.
Strong desire to build hardware, solve practical mechanical problems, and work close to the action rather than only in CAD
Comfort working in a
small, fast-moving environment
with changing priorities and direct feedback
Interest in machine design, CNC equipment, automation, manufacturing, and prototype‑to‑production work
Strong communication skills and willingness to work closely with leadership, builders, technicians, and other functions as needed
Ability to work
on‑site in Bristol, CT
on a full‑time basis
Work environment
This is a hands‑on role in a small company environment. The work can involve rapid context‑switching between current customer projects, internal product development, proposal support, and design improvements. The right person will be excited by a builder‑oriented role with real ownership, direct visibility, and the opportunity to grow quickly with the business.
Compensation
Competitive salary for an early‑career mechanical engineering role, with a structured increase after an initial introductory period based on performance and role readiness.
Work Authorization
At this time, the company is not able to provide immigration sponsorship for this position. Candidates must already be authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time, ongoing basis.
