
ELECTRICIAN SENIOR

Job Description
This position performs highly skilled and technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals and other electrical and electronic equipment; provides instruction and leadership of lower-level electricians; and performs related duties as required. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Physical Demands
The work is considered medium-to-heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: balancing, crawling, crouching, hearing, kneeling, lifting, stooping, visual acuity, and walking.
Work Environment
Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, adverse weather conditions, wetness and humidity, traffic, extreme noise levels, vibration, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights; and involves heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others.
Responsibilities
Installs, tests and maintains mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment associated with the City traffic signal system and other electrical systems, including but not limited to fire alarm systems, automatic gates, outdoor lighting and building / facility electrical systems and equipment;
Installs electrical equipment and lighting for special events as required;
Troubleshoots, repairs and/or replaces electrical and mechanical equipment as needed;
Performs electrical or general maintenance work as required for other divisions and departments;
Hangs banners and installs signage on City streets and buildings as requested;
Performs all duties in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, City policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety;
Determines supplies, parts, tools and equipment needed to accomplish assigned tasks; requisitions parts and supplies as needed;
Maintains assigned vehicles, trucks and equipment;
Assists in coordinating assigned activities and functions with those of other City divisions, departments and outside agencies as appropriate;
Provides instruction and leadership of lower-level electricians as assigned;
Prepares and maintains detailed work records and reports;
Locates underground utilities;
Installs fiber optic cables and performs maintenance;
Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility;
Assists with special projects as required such as festivals and holiday events;
Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to completing records and forms, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, attending meetings, etc.;
Attends meetings, workshops, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills;
Works outside regular work schedule to include on call, holidays, nights, and weekends, as needed; and
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
High school diploma or GED;
Three (3) years of relevant prior experience;
Have or be able to obtain a valid South Carolina Class “B” Driver’s License within twelve (12) months from the date of hire or promotion;
May have an IMSA certification;
Availability to work on call, holidays, nights, and weekends, as needed;
Journeyman Electrician certification.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of mathematics involving the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions; or measurements, logarithmic or geometric construction. May use algebraic solutions of equations and inequalities; descriptive statistics; deductive geometry, plane and solid, and rectangular coordinates; mathematical classifications or schemes;
Knowledge of personal computer equipment with skill in the use of Microsoft Office, utilizing Outlook, word processing, and spreadsheet software programs preferred;
Ability to gather, organize, analyze, examine or evaluate data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information;
Ability to provide information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants;
Ability to lead, operate or repair complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as traffic control devices, electrical / electronic equipment or the application of custom or commercial software or systems; may involve installation and testing. Involves operations of limited scope;
Ability to perform skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem-solving;
Ability to read technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form;
Ability to perform specialized technical or entry-level professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices or the use of a wide range of administrative methods in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure; and
Ability to guide others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.
