Overview
The primary purpose of the Laboratory Coordinator role is to support and coordinate the day-to-day administrative and operational activities of Dr. Baruch's laboratory within the Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology. This is a start-up laboratory that combines bench-based and computational research, and the Laboratory Coordinator will serve as a central point of coordination to ensure smooth, compliant, and efficient laboratory operations.

The ideal candidate will have experience supporting the Principal Investigator by assisting with laboratory organization, purchasing, inventory, regulatory coordination, scheduling, and communication with internal and external stakeholders. This role focuses on coordination, facilitation, and operational support, rather than independent management authority, and helps establish foundational processes as the lab grows.

Administrative & Research Laboratory Coordination

Maintain regular communication with the Principal Investigator to support laboratory priorities and operational needs.

Coordinate with collaborating laboratories, MD Anderson core facilities, and support services to facilitate research activities.

Assist with maintaining laboratory operations within established budgetary and safety guidelines.

Coordinate the ordering, tracking, and organization of common laboratory reagents, consumables, supplies, and equipment.

Maintain inventory records for laboratory materials and equipment.

Provide day-to-day operational support to laboratory personnel as the lab is established.

Assist with ensuring laboratory spaces comply with institutional, state, and federal safety and regulatory requirements.

Coordinate laboratory sample tracking and shipments, ensuring required documentation is completed.

Identify operational issues and escalate them to the PI or appropriate administrative contacts.

Pre-Award & Administrative Support

Assist with purchase requests, reconciliations, inventory tracking, vendor coordination, service agreements, and expense documentation.

Coordinate with vendors and MD Anderson service providers for equipment servicing and repairs.

Serve as a primary point of contact for vendors, MD Anderson core services, and building/site services.

Assist with monitoring waste collection and proper labeling, coordinating with Environmental Health and Safety as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Personnel Support & Regulatory Coordination

Coordinate onboarding and offboarding logistics for laboratory personnel.

Assist with scheduling and tracking required research education, training, and compliance activities.

Support the PI in ensuring laboratory staff follow institutional policies and procedures.

Coordinate regulatory activities and inspections with Environmental Health and Safety, IACUC/IBC, Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, and Post-Approval Monitoring.

Promote a collaborative, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.

Operational Planning & Continuous Improvement

Assist the PI with identifying opportunities to improve laboratory workflows, space utilization, and operational efficiency.

Support documentation of processes and standard operating procedures as the lab develops.

Help identify efficiencies related to equipment use, service contracts, and recurring operational expenses.

Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and operational excellence.

Education & Experience
Education:

Required: Bachelor’s Degree

Experience:

Required: Five years administrative and supervisory experience in a large institution. Preferred: Extensive experience with animal models.
