
TEMPORARY Park Maintenance and Visitor Center Technician– Cheyenne Mountain Stat

Temporary Position (9 months or less) – Pay: $18.00 per hour. Employment starts January 2026, with a maximum of 9 months.
Visitor Center Tech
Customer‑service based position that involves greeting visitors at a visitor center and may include field duties at parks. Daily interaction with park visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
Provide information on the park and the surrounding area to visitors.
Utilize a Point of Sale System to sell passes, permits, camping, registrations, fishing/hunting licenses, and gift certificates.
Answer telephones and take detailed messages.
Accurately collect revenue, complete shift report and shift box at end of each shift.
Prepare campground reservation forms and documents (Island Acres and Fruita).
Document and report visitor complaints.
Perform cleaning and light maintenance duties of interior offices, restrooms, kitchen, watering plants, and litter pick‑up.
Assist with special events or programs within the park.
Prioritize job duties.
Multi‑task.
Maintenance Tech Duties
Responsible for all general park maintenance and cleaning of public facilities such as restrooms, showers, vault toilets, cabins & yurts, campsites, picnic areas, trails, etc.
Operate and perform routine maintenance on state‑owned vehicles and equipment.
Assure quality customer service and facility maintenance, repair and cleanliness.
Provide information and assistance to visitors.
Assist with carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work and transporting materials and supplies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Must be at least 16 years of age.
If position requires operation of a motorized vehicle, must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a current motor vehicle report.
Willing to work outside during inclement weather.
Must be able to lift 75–100 pounds repeatedly during a single workday.
Knowledge of power tools and hand tools preferred.
Knowledge of small engine and other equipment maintenance and repair preferred.
First Aid and CPR certifications may be required.
Must be able to work various shifts, weekends and holidays.
Possess strong interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work with little supervision.
Pursuant to DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a state‑owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any state‑owned vehicle.
To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, motor vehicle records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:
Have an assigned state fleet vehicle.
Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position.
Utilize a state fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle.
Physical Requirements
This position requires physical activities that involve considerable use of arms and legs: climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. Ability to perceive color differences and to hear verbal and radio communications.
Work Context
Outdoors, exposed to weather – working outdoors is essential; exposure to inclement weather, heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.; must be able to hike into remote areas.
Contact with others – most fieldwork is done independently but exposure to the public is common on state parks.
Spend time standing – standing is common in the field.
Coordinate or lead others – must be able to organize seasonal or volunteer crews, supervise their activities.
Exposed to contaminants – during spring months, exposure to weed‑killing chemicals, may be exposed to exhaust or diesel fuels while repairing or running heavy equipment.
Spend time walking and running – walking required when accessing road‑less areas, fixing fences, hanging signs, etc.
Spend time using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools – almost every field‑related activity requires these activities.
Exposed to minor burns, cuts, bites or stings – bites, minor cuts and stings are a regular occurrence when working outdoors.
Uniforms – the park may provide some uniform items. Employee required to purchase limited uniform items at their own expense.
