Overview
Job Title: Controller
Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid - 3 days on-site, 2 days WFH)
Reporting: Reports to the CFO; leads a team of accounting professionals.
Salary and Benefits: Salary $155,000–$180,000 per year plus annual bonus ($1,000–$5,000), comprehensive benefits (100% company-paid deductible), 403(b) with 5% employer match, unlimited PTO, tuition assistance up to $5,200, and paid family leave.
Job Details
The Controller will lead the accounting and financial reporting function, ensuring strong financial discipline and operational rigor. This is a high-impact leadership role with cross-functional interaction and budget oversight.
Responsibilities
Oversee all core accounting functions: General Ledger, Accounts Payable/Receivable, Payroll, Financial Reporting, Internal Controls.
Lead and manage a team of 5–6 accounting staff (Managers, Senior, Staff).
Manage and support month-end and year-end close; oversee audit processes and financial reporting.
Drive budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
Partner with leadership to align financial processes with organizational goals.
Improve processes, systems, and financial controls; strengthen FP&A capabilities.
Qualifications
Must have: Active CPA license.
Experience: Currently working as a Controller for a nonprofit or think tank and manages $35M+ in annual operating budget; OR currently working in public accounting as an Audit Manager/Sr. Audit Manager with nonprofit clients.
Experience managing direct reports.
Nice-to-Have
Experience with Sage Intacct, Solver, or similar cloud-based accounting systems.
Experience working with AI.
Mission-driven with interest in research, education, or policy-related organizations.
