Job Summary
In case of roadway emergencies or weather events the incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.
Responsibilities
Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance
Perform all activities required for roadside maintenance
Perform all roadway surface maintenance activities
Service and make minor repairs to operating equipment
Provide traffic control
Perform basic construction‑monitoring duties and basic inspection activities
Perform other duties as assigned
Snow & Ice Duties
Maintain roadways for snow and ice control
Prepare and inspect winter equipment
Perform preseason snow‑route inspection and post‑storm cleanup
Set up winter stockpile and transfer anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals
Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate inventory and resource reporting
Set up traffic‑control systems and notify dispatch of disabled vehicles
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Valid Class B driver’s license and no air‑brake restriction. Must obtain a Tanker Endorsement prior to hire. Must obtain a Class A license within six months of hire.
Exam Part 1: One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road‑surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities.
OR
Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) substitutes for one year of experience. Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in‑person or via two‑way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Exam Part 2: Candidates who receive a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is level 3 or higher and for Reading is level 4 or higher. Acceptance is contingent on passing the test. If you have previously taken and passed the assessments, you may be exempt. Check with your district HR office.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous MnDOT experience as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to work nights. May be required to work outdoors exposed to weather effects. Must drive a motor vehicle on and off‑road conditions. Must walk on even and uneven sloping ground. Must rotate through various body positions. May operate machinery under varying temperatures. May lift, push, pull, or carry 50–70 pounds infrequently. Must wear and use personal protective equipment.
Additional Requirements
Successful candidate must pass prior‑employer reference checks and a criminal history check. Background check may include SEMA4 records, criminal history, employment reference. Driver’s license check will disqualify applicants for major violations in the last five years or combinations of minor violations.
Position contingent upon a valid commercial driver’s license, a federal DOT pre‑employment drug test (negative), future random drug and alcohol testing, and registration in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
