Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Highway Maintenance)
Location: District 4 Maintenance Garages – Avon, Beacon Falls, Cornwall, Danbury, East Granby, Litchfield, New Milford, North Canaan, Southbury, Thomaston, Waterbury, Winchester
Salary: $69,829 - $89,418 per year
Job Type: Full Time, Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, 40 hours per week
Position Highlights
On-site position within District 4 Maintenance Garages
First shift assignment 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM
Eligibility required for all listed locations
Must accept emergency duty assignments (e.g., snow and ice removal)
The Role
The Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader is a frontline lead responsible for directing highway maintenance crews in daily operations and emergency responses. Duties include snow and ice control, storm cleanup, paving, drainage and roadside maintenance. The role ensures safe, efficient service delivery across multiple municipalities while maintaining compliance with safety and operational standards.
Responsibilities
Plan crew workflow and determine priorities
Schedule, assign, oversee, and review work
Establish and maintain crew procedures
Provide staff training and assistance; conduct or assist in performance evaluations
Act as liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding policies and procedures
Requisition materials and equipment appropriate to the job
Participate in performing the duties of the crew
Make recommendations on policies or standards
Prepare reports and correspondence
Perform preliminary site inspections of assigned jobs
Stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state‑owned airports
Perform related duties as required
Requirements
Current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement (Class A or B)
Valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC)
Copy of last two performance appraisals required at interview
Willingness to accept emergency duties including snow and ice removal, with mandatory winter overtime from November 1 to April 30, and potential several‑day shifts, including holidays and weekends
Residency within 30 miles of the assigned garage
Special Requirements
Accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required
Possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications as required by appointing authority
Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of skilled experience in the maintenance and repair of highways (equivalent to Transportation Maintainer 2 for state employees)
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a lead or secondary inspector (VIP experience)
Acting experience as a Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Highway Maintenance)
Experience leading an echelon and overseeing scheduling and management of snow operations
Experience setting up sign patterns on highways and secondaries
Experience with crash unit operations
Physical Requirements
Adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity to perform duties
Possibility of required physical examination
Working Conditions
Exposure to extremes of weather, frequent lifting of heavy weights, dangerous road and traffic conditions, including heights during bridge work, poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants in summer months, and loud machinery
Potential requirement to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines; use of protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles may be required
