American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Trauma & General Surgery Stepdown/Floor position requiring telemetry strip reading and complex wound care experience, working night shifts on weekends.
Details
Work in a 30–33 bed Trauma & General Surgery inpatient unit that includes both stepdown and floor-level care
Unit is also a nationally recognized Comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Center
Patient population includes multi-trauma, TBI, fractures, complex spinal cord injuries, chest-wall injuries, general surgery (cholecystectomies, ostomies, etc.), bariatric surgery, and general med-surg patients
Stepdown patient ratio is 1:3; floor patient ratio is 1:6
Common drips include heparin and PCAs on the floor; insulin, Cardizem, and other non-pressors on the stepdown
Unit has telemetry with monitor techs who read and run strips; RNs must be able to validate and read strips independently
Stable/chronic ventilator patients present on the unit; respiratory therapy is available 24/7
EMR is Epic
12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Weekend nights required: Friday/Saturday/Sunday or Saturday/Sunday/Monday, every other weekend or 2 weekends per 4-week schedule
Floating to like units (floor and stepdown) is required
13-week contract
Requirements
Active WV or Compact RN license required
BLS certification required
Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
Experience with complex wound care, drains, devices, chest tubes, respiratory support, TBIs, complex spinal cord injuries, and traumatic injuries required
Ability to read and validate telemetry strips required
Epic EMR experience preferred
Driver's license with an address more than 50 miles from the facility required
Two references required for consideration: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference (if permanent employment within the last 12 months, one supervisor reference must be from that facility)
Current skills checklist (within the past year) required for consideration
Copies of certifications and driver's license required for consideration
COVID vaccination required (Moderna, Pfizer, or J&J); medical or religious exemptions may be requested

High-acuity, fast-paced unit where nurses practice at the top of their scope across two levels of care — floor and stepdown
Collaborative team environment working alongside care management, surgical and medical services, rehabilitation, and perioperative services
Staffing support includes a budgeted free charge nurse available 24/7, a house supervisor, and Clinical Associates (nurse aides) when fully staffed
Holiday coverage is integrated into the permanent staff holiday schedule as needed
Royal blue scrubs required
Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before applying
Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year; a 2-year break is required after reaching that threshold
Work history covering 7 years (or from graduation, whichever is less) with no gaps greater than 30 days is required for consideration; each entry should note hospital size, unit size, trauma level, and whether it is a teaching facility
