
Lead Automation Engineer – Custom Machine Design & Commissioning

Role Summary
Our client, a growing industrial automation and systems integration company , is seeking a Lead Automation Engineer to support the design, development, and commissioning of custom automated machinery .
This role is highly hands-on and involves working across the full lifecycle of automation projects—from concept and design through programming, testing, and on-site commissioning . The position sits within the service function and offers exposure to cutting-edge, custom-built systems across a diverse customer base.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluate customer requirements and develop custom automation solutions .
Design industrial automation systems , including electrical controls and power distribution.
Create electrical schematics and hardware designs for custom machinery.
Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, robots, and servo systems .
Integrate and support vision systems and industrial communication networks .
Perform system testing, debugging, and validation prior to deployment.
Commission and service equipment at customer sites (domestic and international travel up to 25%).
Troubleshoot and support installed systems in the field.
Prepare technical documentation and assist with project quoting and estimation .
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field .
5+ years of experience as a Control Systems or Automation Engineer in industrial environments.
Strong experience with PLC and HMI programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
Experience with electrical machine design and industrial automation systems .
Knowledge of machine safety standards and industrial communication networks .
Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally .
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident .
Ability to work on-site when not traveling.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on custom machine design and build projects .
Exposure to robotics, motion control systems, and vision systems .
Strong troubleshooting and commissioning experience in field environments.
Compensation & Work Model
Base Salary: Up to $120,000
Employment Type: Full-time, permanent (W-2)
Work Model: On-site with travel up to 25%
