Behavioral Health Registered Nurse (RN) for the THRIVE unit at Julia Tutwiler Correctional Facility, Wetumpka, Alabama.

Position is open exclusively to current Alabama Department of Corrections (AL DOC) incumbent employees.

Responsibilities

Serve as a contributing member of the multidisciplinary treatment team.

Safely administer prescribed medications to patients and accurately document each administration in the patient chart in accordance with nursing standards and facility policies.

Conduct and document initial or updated nursing assessments.

Initiate, administer, and document prescribed protocols, including medication administrations.

Schedule, track, and facilitate medical sick calls to in‑facility physicians.

Track laboratory and diagnostic procedure orders and results.

Conduct and document at least one psychoeducational group per week related to healthcare.

Complete nursing treatment summaries for discharge summaries.

Coordinate with facility health and correctional staff regarding patients’ mental and physical health care.

Participate in educational and training activities related to mental health care for patients, security personnel, and healthcare staff.

Qualifications

Must hold a current, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Alabama.

Must hold or obtain a valid CPR card.

Must possess strong written communication, verbal, and rapport‑building skills.

Experience training or working in a psychiatric or mental health setting required.

Certification as a Psychiatric RN is highly preferred but not required.

Experience in a correctional or inpatient mental health care setting preferred but not required.

Physical Capabilities
Must have the ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients up to 50 pounds, bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks such as CPR, all while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.
