Position Overview
The Assistant HI Interpreter plays a vital role in facilitating communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, classroom teachers, and other school personnel. This position works under the direct supervision of a highly qualified teacher and ensures that messages are interpreted faithfully, conveying both the content and spirit of the speaker using a mode of communication that is accessible to the student.

Minimum Requirements (Education/Experience)
Two years of study at an institution of higher education; or an Associate’s degree (or higher); or demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment (ParaPro Assessment) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics, as appropriate, and knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate. Understands the implications of hearing loss and its potential impact on a student’s comprehension of English. Computer skills required (e.g., ability to use email). Florida Educational Interpreting Evaluation (EIE) Levels I, II, III and IV preferred (when available).

Preferred (Education/Experience)
Completion of National Interpreter Certification (NIC), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), or Board of Interpreters Certification (BEI) preferred.

Training & Support
Additional training will be provided for selected applicants to ensure readiness and alignment with school standards.

General Responsibilities

Facilitate communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, classroom teachers, and other personnel.

Interpret messages accurately and respectfully, ensuring the student receives the full intent and meaning of the speaker.

Collaborate with educators and staff to support inclusive learning environments.

Requirements (Education/Experience) – Additional

Education: Associates Degree (or higher) or a passing score on the Paraprofessional Assessment.

Skills: Basic understanding of American Sign Language (ASL) or similar forms of sign language communication.
