Summary
The Registered Nurse- Referral Coordination Team position is located at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) - Nashville - TN campus in Health Informatics.

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency: proficiency in basic written and spoken English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).

Graduate of a professional nursing school approved by an accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE).

Individuals attending a master’s level bridge program who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level in Nursing may be eligible to become a registered nurse with a state licensing board prior to completing the program.

Upon achieving a state license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment after successful completion of the bridge program.

Foreign nursing graduate: requires current, full, active, and unrestricted registration; may need formal equivalency validation from a recognized evaluator such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).

Graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or DC must hold a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration.

Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: candidates who meet basic education but lack licensure can be appointed at entry level for 120 days while pursuing licensure (extendable up to two years).

Gratuating on 1/29/2024: all current VHA 0610 series employees performing the same duties are grandfathered as meeting all qualification requirements.

Grade determinations are based on Scope - Education and Dimension criteria (Practice, Leadership, Professional Development, Evidence‑Based Practice).

Education and experience requirements for each nurse level (I, II, III) are described in detail (and accessible via provided link).

Physical requirements include visual acuity, hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, ability to lift at least 50 lbs, and endurance for prolonged standing, walking, and bending.

Employees must pass a pre‑placement physical examination and meet annual health requirements (e.g., influenza vaccination, TB screening).

Duties

The RCT RN is responsible for implementing a streamlined approach to receiving, triaging, and coordinating care for veterans.

The RN possesses intimate knowledge of referral care processes, utilization management standards, documentation requirements, community care regulations, and VHA guidelines.

The RN uses nursing knowledge and systems theory to assess, organize, facilitate, and guide veterans through their full range of care options, including internal and community care.

The RN serves as a liaison to both internal and community providers and manages veteran care throughout the consult process.

The RN supports the medical center’s mission to improve timely access to care, empower veterans to make informed decisions, and ensure eligible veterans receive community care referrals and scheduling.

Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2 years of care coordination or nurse navigation experience in medical‑surgical or mental‑health specialties.

Compensation: VA Nurse Total Rewards Pay Scale (NG57) – competitive salary with regular increases and potential performance awards.

Paid Time Off: 50 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 Federal holidays).

Retirement: traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.

Licensure: one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or DC.

Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7:30 am‑4:00 pm; telework available on an ad‑hoc basis.
