
Metallurgical Lab Supervisor

The Metallurgical Laboratory Supervisor provides laboratory testing and product certification support to the mill operating departments. This person is responsible for ensuring safe work practices are in place and continually effective, ensuring personnel perform test sample preparation, testing and certification processes efficiently, and maintaining maintenance activities to ensure the reliability of the laboratory service. The lab supervisor is expected to manage the lab environment effectively within the guidelines of an annual operating budget.

Leads a team of hourly lab technicians, metallographers and other technical staff, including scheduling, to achieve daily testing requirements and targets.
Ensures the lab processes are efficient, safe, reliable and provide accurate and repeatable test results through daily audits and review of test results.
Develops and routinely monitors key lab performance metrics related to testing rates, acceptance rates, sample backlog, delay rates, etc.
Communicates non-conforming and/or suspected non-conforming materials to the QA and operations teams in a timely manner.
Manages/coordinates calibrations along with testing equipment and facility maintenance.
Trains lab technicians to understand the requirements of new or revised procedures.
Identifies opportunities for improvement and works with management on capital planning and execution of improvement projects.
Maintains the Quality Management System documentation as it pertains to laboratory testing requirements.
Performs weekly lab safety reviews and addresses any opportunities in a timely manner.
Education And Experience
Technical degree preferred.
Minimum 1 year experience in a supervisory role required.
Demonstrated experience of managing a workforce in a material testing lab preferably in a unionized environment.
Possesses knowledge of machining methods/practices, standard sample preparation techniques and various destructive testing such as tensile, impact, Rockwell, and Brinell hardness testing.
Knowledge of mechanical testing standards such as ASTM A370 is a plus.
Background in ISO 9001 based Quality Management Systems is a plus.
Capable of using MS Office tools such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Strong leadership skills with proven ability in directing and motivating others, conflict management, and effective communication.
