Veterinary Technician

Position Overview
The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to patients and clients. Responsibilities include patient care by determining animal requirements, conducting examinations and diagnostic procedures, assisting during surgery and operations, providing nursing care, feeding and caring for patients, maintaining medical supplies and equipment, triage and discharge of patients, and maintaining patient medical records.
Key Responsibilities

Determine animal requirements by conducting examinations and interviews, reviewing care plans and records, completing laboratory tests and studies, and diagnostic imaging.
Care for patients by taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering medications, drugs, and vaccines, and bandaging or wrapping wounds.
Assist during examinations and operations by assembling required supplies and instruments, bringing patients to examination rooms, restraining patients, and following the veterinarian’s directions.
Provide excellent patient care by applying knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, equipment usage, and drug administration.
Obtain and verify medications.
Ensure patients have food and water; maintain clean patient rooms, cages, and equipment; observe patients for clinical signs of disease.
Fill prescriptions and administer medications as directed, with proper documentation and security of controlled substances.
Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments, sanitizing areas, storing sterile supplies, verifying shelf life, and complying with legal regulations.
Maintain medical records by documenting patients’ conditions, reactions, and changes; update the database accurately and timely.
Communicate with pet owners about patient status as directed by the veterinarian.
Maintain equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting, performing preventive maintenance, and coordinating repairs.
Maintain inventory, place orders for supplies, verify and maintain receipts.
Update job knowledge through educational opportunities and reading professional journals.
Release pets to their owners as directed; ensure animals are clean and properly groomed before release.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Perform other duties as assigned by Manager or practice.
Qualifications

Required:

High school diploma or GED; two or more years of experience with veterinary appointments, nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients.
Preferred Skills

Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT) preferred.
Equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
Knowledge of surgery preparation, monitoring, and recovery; basic pet nursing; catheter placement; phlebotomy; emergency medicine; and digital radiology.
Ability to restrain patients and to work with potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and odors.
Strong communication and professional demeanor; ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds and prolonged periods of standing or walking.
Schedule

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:00 am–5:30 pm; Saturday 8:00 am–12:00 pm.
After training, schedule will be set; opportunity to work additional hours to cover shifts.
