Highway & Construction Laborer (Highway Operations Technician Series)

Job Summary
This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. These positions address incidents that result in the closure of the roadway and also perform regular scheduled maintenance on the roadway. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.
Job Duties
Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14, $18.19/hr)
Operate motorized vehicles and equipment
Pavement care and preservation
Landscape care and preservation
Roadside shoulder restoration and repairs
Signing and striping
Delivery of equipment and materials
Environmental compliance
Vehicle and equipment care
Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17, $20.46/hr)
Apprentice classification: trained to perform more advanced duties including operation of vehicles, pavement care, etc.
Similar tasks as Workers: operating vehicles, pavement care, landscape preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care
Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18, $22.45/hr)
Intermediate level duties with lead responsibilities
Responsible for scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinate work
Inspects work, trains, and guides staff in duties mentioned above
Similar tasks as above
Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19, $24.44/hr)
Full journey classification: high-level duties and/or supervisor responsibilities
Responsible for broad scope of high-level operations
Similar tasks as above
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Scheduling, assigning, overseeing subordinate work, inspecting work, training, guiding staff in duties mentioned above.
Qualifications
Highway Operations Worker
6 months of Roadway/Highway job related experience including operating motorized vehicles and heavy‑duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement care, tunnel maintenance or landscape care
Highway Operations Tech 1
1 year of job related Roadway/Highway experience including operation of motorized vehicles and heavy‑duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement care, tunnel maintenance or landscape care
Highway Operations Tech 2
2 years of job related Roadway/Highway experience including same duties
Highway Operations Tech 3
3 years of job related Roadway/Highway experience including same duties
Selective Preferences
Employee must obtain Arizona CDL Class “A” permit within 90 days; CDL required within 6 months of hire for Workers
For Tech 1-3: Must have Arizona Class “A” CDL with manual or automatic and (N) tanker endorsement prior to start; additional endorsements may be required based on area
Pre-Employment Requirements
Registration with FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse required for all CDL holders
Must register and authorize ADOT to conduct limited queries on CDL during employment
Must be able to respond to maintenance yard within 30 minutes 24/7
Must be willing to work in extremes of cold/heat, rugged terrain, and high speed conditions
Must be able to lift/carry, push/pull 50 lbs
All newly hired State employees are subject to and must complete E-Verify
