HIGHWAY & CONSTRUCTION LABORER

Salary: $37,838 - $50,848; Hourly: $18.1918 - $24.4464

Posting Location: HAPPY VALLEY MAINTENANCE, 24251 N 7th Ave, Phoenix AZ 85085

Job Summary
This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, and to be courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.

Job Duties

Highway Operations Worker: entry level position; duties include operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care.

Highway Operations Tech 1: apprentice classification; trained to perform more advanced duties with similar scope as above.

Highway Operations Tech 2: journey level; performs a broad scope of intermediate highway operational duties and lead responsibilities; may schedule, assign, oversee subordinates, inspect work, train and guide staff.

Highway Operations Tech 3: full journey; high level duties and/or supervisor responsibilities; scheduling, assigning, overseeing subordinates, inspecting work, training and guiding staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Highway Operations Worker : 6 months of road/highway related experience (as determined by area needs).

Highway Operations Tech 1 : 1 year of road/highway related experience.

Highway Operations Tech 2 : 2 years of road/highway related experience.

Highway Operations Tech 3 : 3 years of road/highway related experience.

Selective Preferences

Highway Operations Worker: Preference of six months experience in related fields.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Highway Operations Worker: Arizona CDL (Class A) permit within 90 days; CDL (Class A) license within 6 months of hire.

Highway Operations Tech 1–3: Arizona CDL (Class A) license with manual/automatic transmission and tanker endorsement prior to start date; additional endorsements may be required based on area.

All Positions: Registration with FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse required for CDL holders; must register and authorize queries for duration of employment.

Responds to emergency call outs (24/7); must be able to respond to the Maintenance yard within 30 minutes.

May encounter extremes of cold/heat, considerable time away from home base, rugged terrain, and high-speed traffic.

Requires lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs.

May require licensing through the State Board of Pesticide Control to dispense herbicides/pesticides.

Newly hired state employees are subject to E-Verify.
