Patient Access Specialist

Job Responsibilities

Assign accurate MRNs, complete medical necessity and compliance checks, provide proper patient instructions, collect insurance information, receive and process physician orders, and utilize an overlay tool while delivering excellent customer service measured by Press Ganey.

Operate the telephone switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter‑office calls.

Adhere to policies and provide compassionate customer service in all interactions.

Accountable for point‑of‑service goals as assigned.

Utilize quality auditing and reporting systems to correct accounts, audit accounts for employees, departments, and facilities, and ensure all forms are complete, accurate, and timely to meet audit standards, providing statistical data to leadership.

Pre‑register patient accounts prior to visits, including inbound and outbound calls to obtain demographic, insurance, and other patient information and collect financial liabilities, point‑of‑service collections, and past‑due balances with payment plan options.

Explain consent for treatment forms to the patient or guarantor, obtain signatures and witness names, and distribute patient education documents such as Medicare, Tricare, Observation Forms, MOON form, and consent forms.

Review eligibility responses in the insurance verification system, select applicable insurance plan codes, and enter benefit data to support point‑of‑service collections and billing processes for a clean claim rate.

Accurately screen medical necessity using the Advanced Beneficiary Notice software, inform Medicare patients of possible non‑payment, and distribute ABN and other designated forms as appropriate.

Experience

1+ years of customer service experience.

Inquisitive and open to innovation, including exploring AI to improve processes and patient experiences.

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED required.

Certifications

CRCR required within 9 months of hire (company paid).

Compensation and Location
This position pays between $17.00 and $18.15 per hour, based on experience. The role is onsite, and candidates must be able to work on‑site at Mercy – Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY.
