Summary
CYP Assistants work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. The CYP Assistant's day includes helping children develop social skills such as making friends and conflict resolution; choosing healthy snacks or recreational activities; building self‑help and school readiness skills; and exploring the environment around them.

Duties
The duties and responsibilities of the CY Program Assistant have been grouped into categories, including curriculum, indoor and outdoor environment, interactions and relationships, supervision of children and youth, parent and employee communication, assessment, compliance, and additional responsibilities.

Curriculum

Develop schedules and activity plans, review and provide input into those created by entry‑level and intermediate‑level Educational Aids (CY-1702‑I), and ensure plans incorporate the observed needs of individual children and youth.

Implement activities and special events that meet the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs of children and youth; incorporate any special instructions from parents such as dietary or physical needs.

Prepare and implement program options for children and youth with special requirements; care for children and youth with special needs as directed by the supervisor.

Demonstrate, instruct, lead, and facilitate planned and spontaneous program activities.

Role‑model developmentally appropriate practice and activity‑area management techniques.

Promote and model safety, fitness, health, and nutrition practices.

Arrange for and/or serve appropriate snacks or meals where applicable.

Indoor and Outdoor Environment

Help prepare, arrange, and maintain indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials to accommodate daily schedules.

Set up displays and bulletin boards.

Inventory equipment on a recurring basis and recommend replenishment of damaged, missing, or depleted supplies.

Secure supplies, equipment, and facilities.

Interactions and Relationships

Establish a program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions with other children, youth, and adults.

Interact with children and youth using approved child‑guidance and youth‑development techniques.

Supervision of Children and Youth

Provide care, supervision, oversight, and accountability for participants in compliance with DoD, NAF Component, and local installation policies.

Maintain control of and account for whereabouts and safety of children and youth.

Supervise children and youth during indoor and outdoor activities, field trips, outings, and special events.

Ensure children and youth depart with an authorized person per written parental instructions.

Observe participants for signs of illness, abuse, or neglect and report as directed. The incumbent is a mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services per local policy in the event of suspected abuse or neglect.

Parent and Employee Communication

Interact professionally with employees, parents, and local installation command personnel.

Provide parents with daily verbal or written feedback about their child or youth or program activities.

Participate in conferences with parents and employees.

Assessment

Observe children and youth; document developmental progression or concerns; use information for planning.

Participate in program evaluation using designated instruments such as programmatic rating scales, risk assessment tools (if required), self‑inspection materials, and national accreditation tools.

Compliance

Assist in achieving and maintaining DoD certification and national accreditation or equivalent.

Ensure compliance with laws, policies, and regulations applicable to DoD CY programs; notify supervisor of health, fire, and safety concerns.

Additional Responsibilities

Collect, maintain, and report program participation data.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications or credentials required by federal, state, or national accreditation institutions used in DoD Child and Youth Programs.

Pass all applicable records and background checks.

Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing; a positive or missed test is grounds for removal.

Pass a pre‑employment physical, provide evidence of immunization, be free of communicable diseases, and obtain appropriate immunizations.

Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at the time of application.

Marijuana is illegal under federal law; a positive test for marijuana results in withdrawal of the job offer and 6‑month ineligibility for DoD employment.

This position is a Test Designated Position (TDP); the incumbent will be subject to and must consent to pre‑employment and random drug testing.

Qualifications
A qualified candidate possesses the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and experience:

Entry Level (CY-1702-01)

Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

Follow verbal and written instructions.

Complete all Department of the Navy training requirements within the specified timeframe.

Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.

Work cooperatively as a member of a team.

Intermediate Level (CY-1702-01)
Entry‑level qualifications plus:

Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles to meet children’s physical, emotional, social, and intellectual needs.

Implement developmentally appropriate principles and practices to provide high‑quality direct care and education.

Interpret a curriculum or activity plan.

Plan and organize, and work cooperatively as a team member.

Six months of experience working with children or youth in a child‑and‑youth setting.

Target Level (CY-1702-02)
Entry‑ and intermediate‑level knowledge and abilities plus:

Knowledge of child and youth development principles to inform program response to meet needs of children and youth.

Skill to implement developmentally appropriate child‑and‑youth development principles, practices, and services.

Skill to promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.

Skill to work cooperatively as a team member.

Skill in verbal communication to provide basic program information and explain CYP processes and procedures.

One year of experience working with children or youth in a child‑and‑youth setting.

Education

Must provide a copy of H.S. diploma, GED, or college transcripts showing any degree awarded.

Entry Level (CY-1702-01)
Must be at least 18 and possess a high‑school diploma or equivalent; prior experience working with children or youth is preferred.

Intermediate Level (CY-1702-01)
Must be at least 18, have a high‑school diploma or equivalent, six months experience in a child‑and‑youth setting, and complete Navy Entry‑Level training requirement (Army, Air Force, Marine equivalent accepted).

Target Level (CY-1702-02)
Must be at least 18, possess one year experience in a child‑and‑youth setting, and have one of the following: completion of the DoD standardized training courses; a valid Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School‑Age (MSA) credential; or a minimum of a two‑year degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Youth Recreation, Physical Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Youth Development, or a related field.

Additional information: The role requires compliance with federal workplace drug‑free policy. Non‑U.S. citizens with fewer than three years of recent U.S. residential history may be ineligible. Some positions may require a one‑year probationary period and electronic direct deposit within the first 30 days of employment.
