Job Summary
CYP Assistants work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the Child and Youth Program (CY Program). The Assistant helps children develop social skills, make healthy choices, build self‑help and school readiness skills, and explore their environment.
Responsibilities
Curriculum:
Develops schedules and activity plans; implements activities and special events that meet the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs of children and youth; prepares program options for children with special requirements; leads and facilitates planned activities; promotes safety, fitness, health, and nutrition practices; arranges appropriate snacks or meals.
Indoor and Outdoor Environment:
Prepares, arranges, and maintains activity areas and materials; sets up displays and bulletin boards; inventories equipment; secures supplies, equipment, and facilities.
Interactions and Relationships:
Establishes a program environment that sustains participant interest; interacts with children using approved guidance techniques.
Supervision of Children and Youth:
Provides care, supervision, and accountability; maintains control and safety; supervises during activities and field trips; ensures proper departure; observes for illness or abuse and reports as required.
Parent and Employee Communication:
Interacts professionally with employees, parents, and command personnel; provides daily feedback; participates in conferences.
Assessment:
Observes and documents developmental progress; participates in program evaluation using rating scales and assessment tools.
Compliance:
Assists in achieving and maintaining DoD certification and accreditation; ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Additional Responsibilities:
Collects, maintains, and reports program participation data; performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Complete all required training certificates and maintain certifications or credentials as required by federal, state, or national accreditation institutions used in DoD CY programs.
Pass all applicable background checks and a pre‑employment physical; provide evidence of required immunizations.
Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing; a positive test or failure to submit results is grounds for removal.
Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to obtain a Secret Security clearance.
Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at the time of application.
Job is a Test Designated Position (TDP); employee must consent to drug testing.
Qualifications
Entry Level (CY‑1702‑01)
Effective written and oral communication in English.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Complete all DoN training requirements within the specified timeframe.
Promote effective relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.
Work cooperatively as a member of a team.
Intermediate Level (CY‑1702‑01)
Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles.
Implement developmentally appropriate practices.
Interpret a curriculum or activity plan.
Plan and organize tasks; work cooperatively as a team member.
Six (6) months of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting.
Target Level (CY‑1702‑02)
Advanced knowledge of child and youth development principles.
High‑quality direct care and education skills, individually or in groups.
Exceptional communication skills to explain program processes.
One (1) year of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting.
Education
High school diploma, GED, or college transcripts (showing degree awarded).
