Ophthalmic Medical Technician

Description

The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for collecting and recording ocular and systemic patient histories, visual acuity, blood pressure, intraocular pressure, auto refractions, manifest refractions, performing external examinations, dry eye testing, and disease‑specific extra testing.
Ophthalmic Technicians may not diagnose or treat eye disorders, prescribe medications, or act as independent practitioners. They provide diagnostic information and clinical data in the ophthalmic exam to the treating physician and may assist in surgery, patient education, and compliance with prescribed treatment.
Responsibilities

Collect patient medical history.
Instruct patients on post‑operative care, medication use, contact lens care, and exam expectations.
Perform visual acuity testing, auto refractions, and manifest refractions (glasses prescription).
Perform tonometry (including Goldmann). Measure pupil size and reactivity using PERRLA.
Test eye muscle function and perform confrontational visual field testing.
Perform pachymetry, dry eye testing (Zone Quick, TBUT, interferometry, brightness acuity), corneal topography, retinal nerve fiber layer measurements, retinal thickness, fluorescein angiography, B‑scan ultrasonography.
Assist with contact lens fitting and instruct on insertion and removal.
Assist with in‑office procedures including patient consent and minor procedures.
Assist with laser procedures and work within scope of practice under physician supervision.
Participate in light cleaning and maintain a sanitized environment.
Supervisory Responsibility

Reports to Lead or Supervisor of Technicians.
No direct reports.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Stand/walk >95% of the day performing essential duties.
Full‑body rotation (bending, stooping, twisting).
Lift at least 20 lbs.
Communicate with others to exchange information.
Repeat motions involving wrists, hands, fingers.
No adverse environmental conditions expected.
Hours of Work

Monday through Friday, starting as early as 7:00 a.m. and as late as 6:00 p.m. Shifts are assigned based on business needs.
Travel

Travel between clinic locations is required and scheduled by clinical managers or designees.
Qualifications

Minimum one year experience in Ophthalmology.
Certification through JCAHPO preferred.
Associate’s Degree preferred.
Skills and Abilities

Superior interpersonal and communication skills.
Proficiency in manifest refraction.
Proficiency in Goldmann tonometry.
Ability to multitask effectively.
Attentive to detail and accuracy.
