Overview

Summary

This position is for a certified Pharmacy Technician (inpatient/outpatient) at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee - WI. Pharmacy technicians at the GS-07 grade level are nationally certified by PTCB or NHA and can work autonomously - using independent judgement to perform a full range of duties.

Basic Requirements

Citizenship - You must be a citizen of the United States
English Language Proficiency - You must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f)
Certification (GS-07 and above) - For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: PTCB (Certified Pharmacy Technician, CPhT) or NHA (ExCPT)
Grandfather Provision - A Pharmacy Technician employed in VHA on the effective date of the qualification standard (11/7/2023) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title - series and grade held
For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements but meet applicable qualifications at the time of appointment, reassignment or promotion provisions apply as described in the standard
Higher grade requirements - Licensure/certification/registration must be met before promotion to higher grade levels
Temporary appointments - May not be extended or reappointed until full basic requirements are met
Hybrid status re-entry - Protected status may be affected if leaving and re-entering the occupation
Grandfathered credentials maintenance - Must maintain required credentials as a condition of employment
GS-07 qualification - At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) - Demonstrate KSAs including knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, the computerized prescription process, and ability to resolve issues with the healthcare team
Other KSAs - Ability to train developmental technicians and students; dispense medications following all regulations; troubleshoot ADE or technology platforms

Duties

Major duties include interpreting, filling, and preparing prescriptions for pharmacist verification
Maintain clean and orderly work areas and ensure stock and equipment are properly stored
Ensure drugs and supplies are stored and secured according to USP and VA guidelines
Receive, check, rotate, and stock items; identify and reconcile discrepancies
Utilize automation dispensing equipment following safety and QA procedures
Record expiration dates in the dispensing system and perform monthly inspections for proper storage
Compound and/or reconstitute oral or external medications (non-sterile)
Answer questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy staff regarding drug distribution
Identify basic therapeutic problems and alert the pharmacist to potential clinical interventions
Assist in training new staff technicians, interns, and students; perform duties of lower grade technicians as needed
Assist higher level technicians as needed; participate in performance improvement initiatives
Maintain national certification and comply with all VA and Pharmacy regulations
May be assigned to other areas of pharmacy service as needed
Perform duties in inpatient/outpatient activities as assigned (e.g., in the absence of specific technicians)
Benefits and Schedule

Work Schedule: Full Time; Second Shift 3:30 pm - 12:00 am with rotating weekends and federal holidays
First shift: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm for approximately 4-6 months, then move to second shift
Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases; higher step rate may be determined based on qualifications
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days per year (annual leave, sick leave, federal holidays)
