Position Summary

This position involves the care and husbandry of laboratory animals. Duties include providing feed, water and daily care for multiple species in support of research. The incumbent performs sanitation duties such as cleaning cages, animal rooms and ancillary areas, observes animals daily for signs of sickness, abnormal behavior and overall health status, records environmental conditions (temperature, humidity and lighting), advises supervisors regarding facility maintenance issues, and operates mechanical cage washers, pressure washers and other animal care equipment.
Follows safety procedures and wears appropriate PPE. Maintains daily logs, animal census and performs other duties as assigned. Participates in staff meetings, continuing education and training classes. Works rotating schedule including weekends and holidays. Participates in UGA’s Occupational Health & Safety Program including vaccinations.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Comfortable handling and caring for ferrets, rodents and small animals.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Excellent observational skills.
Effective communication with co‑workers and researchers.
Physical Demands

Must withstand sustained physical activity, including standing, bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds. Exposure to high humidity, unpleasant odors, animal excreta, noise, biohazards. Requires PPE and ability to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods.
Duties & Responsibilities

60%

Perform daily animal care and husbandry: feeding, watering, handling/transport, health checks, cage changes, enrichment and environmental monitoring, ensuring animals are maintained in accordance with SOPs.
25%

Clean and sanitize animal rooms, ancillary areas, enclosures, equipment. Operate and transport equipment, keep work areas organized, maintain supply inventories, perform minor maintenance tasks and IPM duties.
15%

Maintain records and logs, perform animal treatments, participate in training, occupational health and safety program, perform weekend and holiday duties, provide assistance to facility users and departmental staff, perform other duties as assigned.
