Maintenance Mechanic IV Lead (Phoenix, AZ)
Position Overview
The University is looking for a Maintenance Mechanic IV Lead. This position performs highly skilled and complex maintenance and repair work across one or more building trades to ensure University facilities, systems, and infrastructure operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with institutional standards. This position independently diagnoses and resolves complex technical issues, recommends process and system improvements, and serves as a technical resource within their area of expertise. Work is performed with broad operational latitude and directly impacts building operations, safety, and service delivery across the campus.

Responsibilities
Perform advanced skilled trades maintenance and repair.
Independently perform complex installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work in one or more skilled trades (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical systems, or building infrastructure).
Ensure systems operate reliably, safely, and in accordance with codes, standards, and University procedures.
Diagnose complex technical issues and implement solutions.
Analyze highly complex equipment, system, or facility issues; determine root causes; and develop effective corrective actions.
Exercise strong judgment and decision-making to select appropriate methods, materials, and techniques to resolve problems efficiently and safely.
Serve as technical resource and mentor.
Act as a subject-matter expert in assigned trade areas.
Provide guidance, technical consultation, and informal coaching to junior staff, apprentices, and team members. Assist with training on tools, procedures, safety practices, and system operations.
Coordinate work and communicate with stakeholders.
Coordinate maintenance activities with supervisors, other trades, contractors, and campus partners to minimize service disruptions.
Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including reporting on work status and system conditions.
Support continuous improvement and compliance.
Recommend improvements to maintenance practices, workflows, and system performance.
Maintain accurate documentation, work orders, and records. Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental requirements, and University policies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of skilled trades practices, tools, materials, and methods related to assigned area(s) of expertise.
Knowledge of building systems, equipment, safety regulations, and applicable codes and standards.
Understanding of preventive maintenance principles and facility operations.
Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for complex technical issues.
Ability to interpret technical manuals, drawings, schematics, and specifications.
Effective communication skills for coordinating with supervisors, peers, contractors, and campus customers.
Skill in using specialized tools, equipment, and diagnostic instruments safely and effectively.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to less experienced staff.
Ability to perform physically demanding work in varied environmental conditions, as required by the role.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, apprenticeship program, technical training experience required.
Seven years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous work experience in a college/university setting.
Seven years of experience in various maintenance trades/operations.
Mastery-level knowledge of assigned trade(s) with the ability to work independently on highly complex tasks.
