Overview
USU Eastern Upward Bound is a federally funded grant program designed to encourage post‑secondary preparation of high‑school students from low‑income families who are first‑generation college‑bound. The program serves 63 students from Grand, Emery, and Carbon counties. During a six‑week summer program, 30 Upward Bound students experience intensive academic, cultural, and social expansion while living in the residence halls at USU Eastern.

Program Details
The summer program begins approximately May 25 and ends July 3.

Responsibilities

Live in the USU Eastern residence halls with program participants and be on‑duty 24 hours per day for the six‑week program, with alternating afternoon, morning, and weekend shifts.

Supervise individual and group tutoring, mentoring, and peer advising.

Assist instructors with academic programs.

Supervise study halls.

Plan and supervise community service activities.

Plan and supervise social, cultural, and recreational activities.

May be required to drive students to program sites.

Accompany participants and supervise during the final out‑of‑state trip.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Completed at least one year of college (24 earned credits) and in good academic standing (cumulative GPA ≥ 2.9) at the last institution attended.

Available to attend required training prior to the program start.

Valid driver’s license and good driving record to perform essential duties, such as driving university vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in tutoring and/or peer counseling.

Previous involvement with USU Upward Bound or TRIO programs.

Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with adolescents from diverse backgrounds.

Ability to manage multiple tasks.

Knowledge of barriers to higher education for low‑income and/or potential first‑generation college students.

Benefits
Salary: $2,500 plus room and board for six weeks of employment.

All expenses for the final out‑of‑state trip are included in compensation.
