Summary
This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – Veterans Health Administration (VHA) – Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6) – Salisbury Health Care System – Salisbury VA Medical Center (VAMC) – organizationally aligned within Police and Security Service – Salisbury – North Carolina. The position reports to the Supervisory Police Officer.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. The GS‑05 grade level requires specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS‑04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to: knowledge of laws and regulations, law-enforcement operations and practices, maintaining order, and protecting life and property. Eligible experience may have been gained through work on a police force, military police service, visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resources, criminal investigative duties, or other roles that provided the required knowledge and skills. Police work must have included patrolling assigned areas to enforce laws and ordinances, regulating traffic, controlling crowds, preventing crimes, and/or arresting violators. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. Applicants may substitute education for the required experience if they have a 4‑year bachelor’s degree in Police Science or a comparable program from an accredited institution. They may also meet the requirement through completion of a federal, state, or local police academy with at least 40 classroom hours of instruction in police procedures and local law, combined with at least nine months of specialized experience as listed above.

Additional requirements include a valid unrestricted state driver’s license with a safe driving record, and a medical examination. VA Police Officers must carry agency-approved firearms while on duty, achieve and maintain qualification or certification with those firearms, and participate in an 8‑week training course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center. Applicants selected for a designated drug‑testing position must submit to urinalysis prior to appointment. Candidates must also be able to conduct background investigations, meet medical standards for vision and hearing, and demonstrate emotional and mental stability.

Duties

Serves as a Police Officer carrying out responsibilities on Veterans Affairs Departmental properties, including owned, leased, or licensed sites.

Identifies criminal activity and apprehends violators when appropriate.

Cites or arrests violators of regulations and laws when necessary.

Conducts Community‑Based Policing Operations by participating in social events on VA Property and engaging the public in non‑confrontational interactions to build community trust.

Protects Veterans, volunteers, and others on Departmental property from threats to personal safety when force is necessary to enforce laws and regulations.

Carries firearms and other weapons, intervenes when necessary to deescalate situations, and determines appropriate force.

Advises individuals of their constitutional rights and protects the civil rights of persons.

Conducts investigations, apprehensions, and detentions of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against federal criminal laws.

Executes arrest warrants issued by federal and local courts.

Responds to active crimes in progress and makes independent decisions to preserve life and property without supervision.

Preserves crime scenes, summons additional emergency responders, and coordinates evacuations as needed.

Identifies security vulnerabilities and documents changes in crime prevention programs.

Mitigates opportunities for assault, illegal entry, and theft of highly protected information and property at hospitals and other facilities.

Work schedule: Various/Panama Schedule.

Physical requirements: Regular standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and other physical exertion during alarms, pursuits, training, and patrols.
