
Medical Assistant III - Dermatology

Position Summary
Lead the work of Medical Assistants I and II, and/or act as the primary clinical resource in a large multi‑physician clinical practice. Function as a Medical Assistant, preparing and maintaining exam rooms, charts, obtaining reports and records, directing patient flow, and ensuring the overall smooth running of the clinical office.

Responsibilities
Patient Care Duties
Interact directly with patients in clinic setting and complete clinical tasks, including obtaining vital signs, conducting EKGs, performing phlebotomy and verifying medications.
Prepare for office hours by obtaining charts, scheduling tests, and preparing exam rooms.
Assist with examinations, procedures and lab tests.
Assist with renewal and authorization of non‑narcotic medications per standing orders and department guidelines.
Administer medications under the order of physicians or nurse practitioners (including vaccines and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections).
Communication and Documentation
Direct patient flow, assist with special procedures/treatments and complete requisitions.
Route phone messages, patient questions and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
Assist with care coordination by tasks such as calling patients with test results, scheduling appointments, managing return calls, scheduling surgeries, diagnostic procedures and admissions, and monitoring new and return patient contacts.
Complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
Answer basic questions from patients/families regarding treatments, diagnoses and procedures.
Complete requisitions/orders per WashU guidelines.
Equipment and Supplies
Monitor supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies, equipment or garments are available and comply with regulations.
Cleans and stocks exam rooms and sterilizes instruments.
Other Functions
Maintain HIPAA compliance, skills/competencies and participate in in‑services, staff programs, continuing education and cross‑training programs per WashU policies.
Comply with OSHA, state and federal regulatory standards.
Participate in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
Perform other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent, or a combination of education and/or experience.
