
Phlebotomist

Responsibilities
Responsible for efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Perform all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set‑up, monitoring, and donor disconnect.
In compliance with SOPs and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, perform venipuncture to begin the pheresis process.
Evaluate vein performance of the donor to identify problems, make necessary corrections to expedite donation time, ensure product quality and donor safety, and adjust the process to provide a positive donor experience.
Educate new donors on therapeutic products made from donated plasma, explain the screening process, health screening tests performed, appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition, and other pertinent information; answer donor questions promptly, accurately and professionally.
Maintain alertness to any donor reactions, assist with reactions or notify appropriate staff.
Use Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents during pheresis, such as machine alerts, volume variances, and donor adverse events.
Perform calibrations and verify maintenance as outlined in SOPs; respond to and resolve complex equipment alarms or donor issues.
Troubleshoot equipment failures, create incident documentation, remove or replace equipment from service.
Monitor donor flow on the donor floor to assure continuous turnover; alert Group Leader or Supervisor of donor flow issues.
Collect arm or whole blood samples from donors for testing.
Ensure accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in SOPs.
Understand policies and procedures for hyperimmune programs at the center, if applicable.
Maintain a clean and efficient work environment, ensure operating supplies and forms are available as needed, follow all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures, and promote safety in all actions.
Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donor, and center information.
Be cross‑trained in other areas to meet business needs.
Possess bilingual skills, as required by the organization, to meet business needs.
Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum twelve (12) months experience in a medical or health care environment preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
For Centers located in CA the following experience is also required:
Persons performing automated plasmapheresis procedures must be at a minimum state certified as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I.
Current Registered Nurse by the State of California.
