Medical Assistant –
The Medical Assistant is a key member of the primary care team, working closely with physicians to deliver high‑quality patient care. Duties include reviewing and updating health records, measuring vital signs, and preparing treatment rooms for examinations.
Essential Functions
Provide excellent customer service by greeting patients and community members respectfully.
Prepare and review patient charts, verifying all diagnostic test results and medical records are current.
Measure vital signs such as pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, and height.
Perform clerical duties related to the department, including inventory checks, supply management, referral tracking, and answering phones as needed.
Troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
High School Diploma or GED.
Licensure/Certification
Medical Assisting certification from one of the following (required within 12 months of start date):
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), American Association of Medical Assisting
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), American Medical Technologists
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), National Healthcareer Association
Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA), National Association for Health Professionals
National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), National Center for Competency Testing
Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR‑OE) (not accepted in South Carolina)
BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).
Experience
One year of medical assistant healthcare experience (preferred, not required).
Two years of clerical experience in a physician’s office (preferred, not required).
Skills & Abilities
Problem‑solving skills.
Basic computer skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Professional engagement with staff and patients.
