The ASPCA’s Community Medicine (CM) team provides expert veterinary care through stationary and mobile clinics, serving underserved communities in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. CM aims to improve animal welfare and support pet owners by offering basic and preventive care, partially or fully subsidized when needed. CM treats people and pets with dignity and respect, helping owners make informed decisions about their pets’ health and wellbeing regardless of finances.
Summary: The Senior Veterinary Assistant (SVA) - Mobile Veterinary Services (MVS) is a vital member of the veterinary medical team. The SVA supports mobile spay
euter surgery and mobile primary pet care for pet cats and dogs at various locations in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The SVA drives the mobile clinic from the logistics center in Paramount to daily clinic locations, assists the veterinarian and technician with animal handling and procedures, enters medical records, monitors patients under anesthesia, and helps clean and restock the clinic at day’s end before returning it to Paramount.

euter surgery and mobile primary pet care. Responsibilities include driving the mobile clinic, communicating with clients, assisting the veterinary team with animal handling and anesthesia, recording medical information, and maintaining clinic readiness.

Compensation

Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on education, training, experience, location, and other factors. The target hiring range is $25.00 - $26.44 per hour for new hire offers; compensation may increase over time based on performance. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for the most qualified candidates.

Work Schedule and Location

Full-time position, approximately 10 hours a day (including driving time), 4 days a week, Monday through Friday. Flexibility to work beyond scheduled hours. Primarily based at ASPCA Mobile Clinics throughout the Greater Los Angeles area; may report to the South LA Spay/Neuter Clinic. Assignment to a mobile clinic is subject to change based on operational needs.
Responsibilities

Medical
Care for approximately 25-30 cats and dogs per day in spay
euter surgery; or 35-40 community cats
Provide a safe, compassionate environment using low-stress handling during exams, treatments, injections, venipuncture, intubation, ear cleaning, and nail trimming
Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients pre-, intra-, and post-operatively
Take direction on medical protocols from the clinic veterinarian or veterinary technician
Prepare and maintain pre-operative areas and operating room
Ensure anesthesia machines, pulse oximeters, scales, and equipment are functional and report issues
Clean, sterilize, and sterilize instruments and endotracheal tubes
Assist with patient exams, medical history, diagnostics, and preparing medications for discharge
Customer Service
Communicate with clients in a non-judgmental, effective, and professional manner
Assist with intake and documentation, and review relevant medical history
Explain basic veterinary concepts to clients, including vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks
Explain information provided by the veterinarian about an animal’s condition to clients
Other
Safely drive and park mobile clinics to/from locations in Los Angeles County
Operate and troubleshoot mobile clinic generators
Enter medical information into digital databases
Represent ASPCA professionally
Adhere to OSHA and DOT protocols
Follow CM Standard Operating Procedures
Collaborate with ASPCA colleagues and participate in CM staff training
Attend staff meetings and training
Perform other duties as assigned

Education And Work Experience

High school diploma or GED required
Minimum 1 year animal handling in a professional setting; veterinary experience preferred
Language

English (Required)
Bilingual (Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.) strongly preferred
