Position Summary
This Research Professional position works as part of a dynamic team and will perform tasks in the laboratory, greenhouse, and office to support a plant genomics research laboratory. The Research Professional will be responsible for preparing culture media, reagents, buffers, and other solutions. Employee will be responsible for performing tissue culture and maintaining plant collections. The Research Professional will perform genetics, genomics, and molecular biology on multiple projects. In addition, this position will supervise undergraduate students. * This position is grant‑funded. While the continuation of funding and employment is anticipated, it is not guaranteed.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field of science.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters of Science in Plant Breeding Genetics and Genomics. Experience in laboratory, greenhouse, and aseptic technique.
Responsibilities
Laboratory Duties
Conduct and analyze experiments in the laboratory
Isolate nucleic acids
Construct next‑generation sequencing libraries
Sequence DNA/RNA
Molecular biology and gene editing
Plant tissue culture
Prepare solutions and media
Maintain a clean and sterile lab environment
Perform bioinformatic analysis and interpret research sequence data
Determine next steps of analysis based on results obtained
Greenhouse Duties
Maintain plant collections in vitro, growth chamber, and greenhouse
Day‑to‑day operation of research greenhouses and growth chambers including planting, maintaining, harvesting plants; collecting material for experiments; performing crosses; mixing soil; filling pots; and cleaning the greenhouses/growth chambers.
Administrative Duties
Data entry
Order basic chemicals/reagents, fertilizers, pots, and other basic supplies
Stock and inventory supplies
Assist with administrative duties such as package shipping and receiving, mail retrieval, answering phones, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Knowledge of basic plant life cycle and genetics
Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques
Knowledge of lab protocols and equipment
Knowledge of genetics, genomics, and molecular biology
Demonstrated ability to understand and implement in‑depth knowledge on subject matter
Demonstrated critical assessment skills
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
Ability to follow protocols
Bioinformatics and computational skills
Strong organizational skills, basic computer skills (Word, Excel, etc.), and the ability to effectively communicate and multitask
Ability to be meticulous, punctual, and reliable
Attention to detail
Utilize computer technology for all applications in a manner that meets performance expectations
Physical Demands
Lift 50 lbs assisted and unassisted
Work in greenhouse in varying temperatures
