Description of Job
This position will provide operational and supervisory oversight of mental health staff working at Sterling Correctional Facility, After Hours Crisis/Weekend Assessment Clinicians, and serve as the master’s level mental health internship coordinator. The role provides mental health services to offenders; offers consultation and guidance to correctional staff and administrators about behavioral health needs and issues, including developmental disabilities and other special‑needs populations; delivers training regarding behavioral health needs and issues; manages psychiatric crises; and assists in the institutional management of mentally ill offenders or other special‑needs populations.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with the doctoral internship coordinator, enhance and expand the scope of the master’s level mental health internship program, which involves collaboration with the behavioral health program administrators in the development of a structured internship training program.
Offer supplemental clinical supervision to interns while ensuring that the assigned site supervisors are delivering direct and consistent clinical supervision and oversight.
Track and organize training for site supervisors, and maintain affiliation agreements with colleges and universities by working jointly with facility Warden, Health Services Administrator, and Clinical Services Headquarters staff.
Directly accountable for the daily administration of mental health services and establish systems for coordinating care among the multidisciplinary team, including behavioral health staff, facility management, offender services, and health care providers.
Provide clinical supervision and direction for mental health staff consistent with licensing and/or accrediting standards/guidelines.
Direct management of psychiatric crises and/or emergencies.
Serve as the master’s level mental health internship coordinator, communicating regularly with local schools to whom CDOC has established affiliation agreements; act as liaison between the schools and the CDOC internship program.
Organize, maintain, and update the mental health on‑call schedule in conjunction with the Mental Health Program Administrator.
Collaborate with the Mental Health Program Administrator to ensure comprehensive mental health program development and delivery in general population facilities.
Collaborate with Parole Mental Health to provide clinical consultation and service coordination for CDOC mental health staff and case managers in developing and implementing community transition plans.
Participate as part of the mental health management team to resolve issues and further develop policy, clinical standards, and procedures.
Work with the mental health trainer to ensure all clinical staff training materials are updated, reflecting the most recent data and current evidence‑based practices.
Ensure staff compliance with the offender grievance process.
Coordinate with the Mental Health Administrator, CDOC doctoral internship training coordinator, behavioral health program administrators, behavioral health clinical trainers, program supervisors, and internship site supervisors to ensure that CDOC staff receive necessary clinical supervision training courses.
Serve as a certified trainer for the Colorado Training Academy and CDOC facilities and participate in the presenter’s training, maintaining CDOC Trainers’ requirements.
Maintain current evidence‑based lesson plans and curriculum for the Colorado Training Academy. Maintain trainer credentials.
Provide clinical guidance to interns in collaboration with behavioral health program supervisors regarding delivery of mental health treatment services.
Provide clinical supervision and direction, evaluate internship performance, and report progress to the school program as needed.
Provide regular training to mental health program supervisors and mental health staff; analyze system gaps and present recommendations to improve systems and procedures to optimize accessibility of treatment for offenders.
Evaluate professional performance and participate in personnel actions related to professional practice.
Offer at least one hour of group clinical supervision to the facility mental health team each week.
Provide clinical and operational supervision to all After Hours Crisis/Weekend Assessment Clinicians.
Participate in the 24‑hour Mental Health On‑Call Consultation rotation.
Assure both emergency and non‑emergency transfer for offenders experiencing acute mental health needs.
Assure continuity of care for offenders by making appropriate referrals and providing necessary information and documentation for receiving units, facilities, or agencies.
Develop a structured Master’s level internship training program in conjunction with the Doctoral Internship Training Coordinator and Mental Health Administrator.
Process all master’s level internship applications and update the associated tracker.
Coordinate regularly with internship site supervisors to ensure students complete the necessary training and receive appropriate clinical supervision.
Offer direct clinical supervision to interns assigned to the hybrid (onsite/telehealth) internship program.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicant must have at least nine (9) years of professional experience providing direct behavioral health or managing patient care in a clinic that provided mental and/or behavioral health services.

Preferred Qualifications
At least one year of supervisory experience at a level which provided oversight of a mental and/or behavioral health program (including coaching, mentoring, daily monitoring, performance management, scheduling, leave approval, and input affecting pay, status, or tenure).
Experience providing operational oversight of a multidisciplinary health care program that provided mental and/or behavioral health services.
Fiscal and budgetary experience.
Experience in a correctional environment.
Conditions of Employment

Possess a valid driver’s license; maintain a safe driving record consistent with agency policy.
Possess a high school diploma or GED.
No felony convictions, including specified federal statutes; no history of sexual harassment related to contact with offenders.
Legally eligible to work in the United States.
Successfully pass all modules of the 6‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension, competency assessments, and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics.
Possess the physical ability to perform the Defensive Tactics requirements:
Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist.
Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled takedown.
Use arms, palms, shins, and feet to deliver blows.
Withstand impact on own body from strikes/blows.
Swing a baton in a striking technique.
Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking.
Get down on one or both knees and rise again with multiple repetitions.
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and on assignment.
Must see and hear to observe and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
Will be willing and able to travel as needed.
Willing and able to work various shifts, including nights and rotating schedules.
Tuberculosis screening required for all new employees.
