Senior Accountant – ILWU
Role Overview
The Senior Accountant oversees essential accounting functions, ensuring the timely completion
of monthly closings and upholding rigorous financial controls. This role oversees junior and
clerical staff, partners with senior leadership, and manages intricate reporting and regulatory
filings with Department of Labor (DOL). We are seeking a proactive professional with
proficiency in financial management, payroll, and benefits administration.
Key Responsibilities
• Financial Operations & General Ledger: Administering the monthly close, performing
reconciliations of cash, accounts receivable and accounts payable; and managing intercompany billing and fixed assets including tracking of work in progress.
• Benefits & Claims Management: Maintain databases for active/retired employees and
dependents; reconcile monthly insurance invoices; and process employee benefit claims,
including Group Life Insurance and Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI).
• Payroll Oversight: Oversee the preparation of all payroll supporting documents, review
and approve journal entries, and ensure accurate general ledger integration.
• Officer & Event Support: Provide financial support to Titled Officers, including budget
preparation and administrative assistance for union events.
• Reporting & Compliance: Prepares triennium budgets, profit and loss reports, compile
supporting schedules for year-end audits and filing of DOL reports through the Office of
Labor-Management Standards (OLMS).
• Tax & Vendor Management: Coordinate year-end 1099 reporting, including data
validation and form distribution.
Requirements
• Education: Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in Accounting, Finance,
or a related field (Required).
• Experience: 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with a focus on seniorlevel operations and staff supervision.
• Payroll & Benefits: Extensive payroll knowledge and experience managing benefit
claims (Life, TDI) are required.
• Technical Skills: Advanced Excel proficiency (lookup function, pivot table, string
formulas) for data analysis and audit preparation.
• Industry Knowledge: Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles;
experience with labor organization reporting to OLMS is a significant plus.
• Availability: Must have ability to commit to extra hours to ensure that key deadlines are
successfully met. The job requires occasional travel.
Compensation is commensurate with experience.
