Manual Lathe Operator / Welder
The Manual Lathe Operator / Welder is responsible for machining precision components used in hydraulic cylinder manufacturing and repair. This position primarily operates manual lathes while also performing welding work related to cylinder repair and fabrication. Approximately 70% of the role involves machining and 30% involves welding. The position requires attention to detail, adherence to quality standards, and the ability to work efficiently while following shop procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate manual lathes to machine parts to required specifications and tolerances
Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions to determine machining operation
Perform welding operations related to hydraulic cylinder repair, fabrication, and component build-up (approximately 30% of job duties)
Use measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances
Perform routine machine adjustments, tool changes, and offsets as required
Troubleshoot tooling, welding, or machining issues to maintain quality and production efficiency
Inspect parts according to documented inspection procedures and required inspection frequency
Perform basic math calculations including addition and subtraction of decimals
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), inspection check sheets, and safety guidelines
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
Communicate any quality or equipment concerns to supervisors or appropriate personnel
Assist with other shop duties as directed by supervision
Qualifications:
Previous experience operating manual lathes preferred
Basic welding experience (MIG, TIG, or stick) preferred
Basic understanding of machining practices and blueprint reading
Ability to read and interpret drawings using the metric system
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Dependable with strong attendance and work ethic
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
Physical Requirements:
Ability to safely lift up to 40 pounds
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours per shift)
Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with cutting oils, welding equipment, machinery, and warm temperatures
Ability to perform repetitive tasks and use hand tools and measuring equipment
