Controller – Annapolis, MD


Our client, a mission‑driven nonprofit organization based in Annapolis, MD, is seeking an experienced Controller to join their leadership team. This is an excellent opportunity for a Controller who is passionate about supporting a meaningful cause while overseeing the financial operations of a respected community organization. The Controller will work closely with executive leadership and play a key role in ensuring strong financial stewardship, operational excellence, and long‑term organizational sustainability.

Job Duties of the Controller:



  • Oversee all day‑to‑day accounting operations including general ledger, month‑end close, account reconciliations, cash management, and financial controls.

  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal leadership and the Board of Directors.

  • Manage the annual budgeting process, monitor budget‑to‑actual performance, and support program managers with financial insight.

  • Supervise and mentor small accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient team environment.

  • Coordinate annual external audits, tax filings, and grant‑related financial reporting.

  • Evaluate current accounting processes and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and internal controls.

  • Maintain oversight of payroll, benefits‑related financial reporting, and expense management.

  • Manage banking relationships, investment reporting, and cash‑flow forecasting.

  • Provide financial analysis and data needed for strategic decision‑making, Board presentations, and long‑term planning.


Qualifications for the Controller:



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA a plus

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a non profit organization

    • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and grant reporting



  • Supervisory experience with the ability to lead, support, and develop staff

  • Proficiency with accounting software, such as SAP

  • Advanced Excel skills

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills

  • High level of integrity, discretion, and commitment to the organization’s mission



Salary: $140,000-$160,000 DOE
