Controller – Annapolis, MD
Our client, a mission‑driven nonprofit organization based in Annapolis, MD, is seeking an experienced Controller to join their leadership team. Job Duties of the Controller:
- Oversee all day‑to‑day accounting operations including general ledger, month‑end close, account reconciliations, cash management, and financial controls.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Manage the annual budgeting process, monitor budget‑to‑actual performance, and support program managers with financial insight.
- Supervise and mentor small accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient team environment.
- Coordinate annual external audits, tax filings, and grant‑related financial reporting.
- Evaluate current accounting processes and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and internal controls.
- Maintain oversight of payroll, benefits‑related financial reporting, and expense management.
- Manage banking relationships, investment reporting, and cash‑flow forecasting.
- Provide financial analysis and data needed for strategic decision‑making, Board presentations, and long‑term planning.
Qualifications for the Controller:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA a plus
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a non profit organization
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and grant reporting
- Supervisory experience with the ability to lead, support, and develop staff
- Proficiency with accounting software, such as SAP
- Advanced Excel skills
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
- High level of integrity, discretion, and commitment to the organization’s mission
Salary: $140,000-$160,000 DOE
