Job Title: Staff Accountant
Employment Type: Full-Time, Onsite
FLSA Status: Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Reports To: Director of Finance
Position Summary
The Staff Accountant supports the organization’s financial operations with a focus on grant accounting, compliance, and general accounting functions. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting grant-funded programs, and assisting the finance department during a period of organizational growth and restructuring across multiple nonprofit entities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Grant Accounting & Compliance
- Record and track grant revenue and expenditures, with an emphasis on federal, state, and local grant funding.
- Ensure grant-related financial activity complies with grant agreements, funding restrictions, and applicable regulations.
- Assist with grant budgeting, monitoring expenditures, and maintaining supporting documentation.
- Support preparation of grant-related financial reports and compliance materials.
General Accounting Functions
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
- Assist with payroll processing and related reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate general ledger entries and account reconciliations.
- Support monthly and year-end close activities.
- Assist with budget preparation and financial monitoring.
Financial Operations & Support
- Maintain organized financial and grant documentation in accordance with internal policies and audit requirements.
- Assist with internal and external audits and monitoring visits.
- Support process improvements related to accounting, data integrity, and internal controls.
- Collaborate with the Director of Finance and other staff to support organizational growth and operational needs.
Qualifications
Experience
- Prior accounting experience required; nonprofit and grant-funded accounting experience preferred.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, and general ledger accounting.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data extraction and analysis.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, organization, and accuracy.
Education
- Degree not required; relevant accounting experience may be substituted for formal education.
Work Environment
- Onsite position.
- Occasional overtime may be required during peak periods.
- Background checks required, including standard and child abuse clearances.
