Overview

Job Title: Press Maintenance Technician
Responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing press equipment and related printing systems to ensure optimal machine performance and production efficiency. This role supports overall operational excellence by performing preventive maintenance, diagnosing equipment issues on electromechanical printing equipment, and collaborating with internal teams and external vendors. Technicians may be assigned to facilities in the Raleigh, Morrisville, or Durham areas and must be able to reliably commute to the designated location.
Responsibilities

Press Equipment Maintenance & Repair: Perform preventive and general maintenance on printing presses, including digital, offset, flexographic, and web-fed systems. Troubleshoot, adjust, and repair mechanical and electrical components to ensure operational uptime.
Press Operations Support: Maintain and service press-specific equipment including ink delivery systems, plate mounting systems, impression cylinders, blanket cylinders, dampening systems, and web handling equipment. Ensure proper calibration and alignment of press components to maintain print quality and registration.
Ink & Color Management Systems: Maintain ink mixing systems, color management equipment, densitometers, and spectrophotometers. Service automated ink dispensing systems and troubleshoot color consistency issues.
Technical Diagnostics & Setup: Diagnose technical issues with press systems and install or calibrate parts to maximize equipment performance, quality, and production output. Use manuals and manufacturer instructions to support efficient problem-solving across all printing processes.
Tool & System Utilization: Operate a variety of tools including electrical, pneumatic, and hand tools. Use the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document maintenance activities and track repairs across all press operations.
Electrical & Mechanical Systems Support: Install and service systems such as motors, drives, switches, pumps, relays, transformers, and circuit-breaker panels specific to press operations. Work with schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams to ensure proper functioning of all printing equipment.
Web Handling & Substrate Systems: Maintain web tension controls, unwind/rewind systems, web guides, splice tables, and substrate feeding mechanisms. Ensure proper material flow and minimize web breaks or substrate damage.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Maintain effective communication with press operators, production teams, management, and external vendors to address equipment issues, status updates, and resolution timelines across the entire press workflow.
Safety & Compliance: Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety guidelines including lock-out/tag-out procedures, and established housekeeping protocols to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
Additional Duties: Support press operations by contributing to production goals and assisting in other duties as needed to ensure efficient functioning of the maintenance unit.
Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Technical training in printing technology or industrial maintenance preferred.
Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant maintenance experience, preferably within the printing or press operations industry. Experience with digital and offset press maintenance is highly desirable.
Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with press electrical controls, pneumatic systems, servo drives, encoders, web tension systems, ink delivery systems, and plate imaging equipment. Experience with press-specific equipment such as impression systems, blanket washing systems, and web handling equipment. Familiarity with PLC ladder logic and HMI systems is a plus.
Knowledge: Strong understanding of printing processes, color theory, mechanical and electrical systems, industrial safety standards (ANSI, IEEE, UL), tolerance-based measurements, and press workflow requirements. Knowledge of substrates and ink chemistry helpful.
Skills: Excellent troubleshooting, diagnostic, and mechanical skills specific to printing equipment. Ability to read technical documentation and interpret press schematics, blueprints, and mechanical drawings.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with press operators and cross-functional teams.
Work Schedule Flexibility: Willingness to work a 2-2-3-2 rotating schedule (7am–7pm for day shift or 7pm–7am for night shift) following a training period of 4–12 weeks (Monday–Friday, 7am–4pm).
What to Expect in the Workplace

Physical Demands: Frequent walking, bending, kneeling, and crawling around large press equipment. Must be able to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 60 pounds occasionally. Work may involve reaching into press areas and confined spaces.
Work Environment: Work is performed in a press room environment with exposure to noise, machinery, inks, solvents, and varying temperatures. May involve working around moving press components and both indoor conditions.
PPE: PPE is required, including safety glasses, ear protection, steel-toed shoes, and high-visibility apparel. Chemical-resistant gloves may be required when handling inks and solvents.
Frequent Movement: Use of hands, wrists, and arms in repetitive motion, as well as operation of press machinery, diagnostic equipment, and computers.

Salary: $39,671.00-$50,480.00
