We are seeking an experienced
Heavy Civil Construction Estimator
to join our team. This person will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects including sitework, earthwork, excavation, utilities, roadwork, paving, drainage, and other public or private infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of construction means and methods, pricing, subcontractor/vendor coordination, and the ability to analyze plans, specifications, and bid documents to develop complete project estimates.
Key Responsibilities
Review project plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, bid documents, and other preconstruction materials to determine project scope and requirements
Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, grading, underground utilities, paving, concrete, drainage, and related heavy civil scopes
Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing to ensure complete and competitive bid coverage
Develop accurate labor, equipment, and material cost estimates based on project requirements and market conditions
Analyze production rates, crew compositions, equipment utilization, and jobsite logistics to build realistic pricing models
Identify project risks, constructability concerns, value engineering opportunities, and cost‑saving alternatives
Attend pre‑bid meetings, site visits, and walkthroughs as needed to better understand project conditions
Coordinate with operations, project management, and leadership teams to review estimate assumptions and final bid strategy
Prepare bid proposals, scopes of work, clarifications, and supporting documentation for submission
Maintain cost history, vendor/subcontractor databases, and estimating templates for future bids
Assist with change order pricing, budgeting, and cost analysis during project execution when needed
Track bid results and perform post‑bid reviews to improve estimating accuracy and competitiveness
Ensure all estimates are completed accurately and on time in accordance with bid deadlines
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent industry experience will also be considered
5+ years of estimating experience in
heavy civil construction
Strong experience estimating projects involving earthwork, grading, utilities, roadwork, paving, concrete, drainage, and infrastructure improvements
Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, blueprints, and contract documents
Knowledge of construction methods, means, equipment, and production rates in heavy civil environments
Experience with quantity takeoffs, conceptual budgeting, hard bids, negotiated work, and change order pricing
Proficient with estimating software, spreadsheets, and takeoff tools
Strong understanding of subcontractor/vendor solicitation and bid leveling
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
