Journeyman Electrician – Electrical and Electronic Instruments and Controls Mechanic
Position Summary: UIC is seeking a Journeyman Electrician to join the Technology Solutions team. The role involves installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing all aspects of communication systems including raceways, cabling infrastructure, and equipment for various types of network and analog facilities according to industry standards and electrical code. Knowledge of IP‑based data communications systems, IP‑based/PBX telecommunications systems, traditional analog systems, and emergency phone systems is required. Work includes both indoor and outdoor environments.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Install, test, troubleshoot and repair both fiber and copper communications cabling for voice and data services which utilize the campus cabling infrastructure.
Rearrange, install or remove surface raceways, cable trays and conduits to support layer 1 cabling.
Maintain and install hardware, such as Centrex, VoIP and emergency phones, network switches, wireless hardware and security hardware.
Communicate and coordinate with network engineering staff, admins and clients in supporting daily work. Communication will be verbal, written and/or electronic.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Other duties include but are not limited to time reporting, material tracking, circuit tracking, etc.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman electrician, with a minimum of four (4) years/48 months of actual work in the trade, which may include apprentice and/or vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by an Electrician, Maintenance Electrician, Journeyman Electrician, Inside Wireman, Control Electrician, Electrician Technician, Industrial Electrician, Journeyman Wireman, Communications Journeyman.
Three (3) years/36 months of experience/training in the maintenance of systems in support of telephony, voice, and data communications, and alarm systems that was gained in the last five (5) years/60 months. This experience/training may include experience/training used to satisfy Credential Requirement #1 above.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Networking, Cisco switches, and Windows Server administration.
Knowledge of Traditional Telephony circuits such as PRI's, DSL, POTS and Centrex circuits.
Understanding of IP‑based telephony and network infrastructure.
Experience and skilled use of certification test instruments, network troubleshooting tools, fiber optic testing and troubleshooting equipment and analog cabling analysis instruments.
Ability to read floor plans, organize job processes and track time and materials on work orders.
Ability to install conduit and surface mounted raceways.
Contribute to a work environment that encourages the respect for co‑workers and clients.
Knowledge of the TIA/EIA Structured Cabling Standards and Electrical Codes and the ability to apply them.
Skilled use of Telecommunications electrical and construction power tools and hand tools.
Knowledge and experience in the installation of both inside plant and outside plant copper and fiber optic cabling.
