Job Description
Special Education Math Teacher
Math: 0.6 high school level / 0.4 middle school level
The educator is the primary instructional delivery person in the classroom. The position is demanding, varied, and complex. The classroom teacher must be a relationship builder, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be well trained in content knowledge and teaching strategies.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred
Valid license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Moderate Disabilities (5-12) and Math (5-12)
SEI Endorsement
Additional content area licensure is encouraged
Licensure requirements and validity are subject to change at the discretion of DESE
Understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias, and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities
Knowledge of current education legislation/regulations
Ability to work effectively with teachers, support staff, and parents and advocate for children in order to effectively problem solve
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and ability to work with all stakeholders
Experience in an urban district/setting preferred
Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
Performance Responsibilities
Responsible for effective planning and assessment of curriculum and instruction.
Plan and teach to assigned students in designated locations and times.
Plan a program of study that meets individual student needs, interests, and abilities.
Provide culturally responsive instruction and learning goals.
Provide small‑group instruction to students with moderate to severe cognitive delays.
Write and implement goals and objectives consistent with student IEPs and provide progress reports.
Provide necessary accommodations for student learning and testing.
Collaborate within the school building and support other staff members to respond to student needs for modification.
Use innovative approaches and instructional strategies including technology.
Create a conducive classroom environment.
Promote high standards and expectations for student achievement and behavior.
Guide learning toward curriculum standards and set clear objectives.
Implement the district's mission, philosophy, and instructional standards.
Assess and document student accomplishments and provide progress reports.
Document learning problems and seek assistance of district specialists as needed.
Maintain accurate records as required by law, policy, and regulation.
Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
Develop reasonable classroom rules and maintain order fairly.
Be available to students and parents outside instructional day when required.
Improve professional competence as related to the assignment and student grade/subject area.
Attend staff meetings as required.
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.
Maintain open communication with students, colleagues, and parents about academic and behavioral progress.
Promote equity and appreciation of diversity, including strategies for students with special needs, 504 plans, and/or second language learners.
Maintain a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment.
Engage with families and community members to foster equity.
Use curricula that reflect diverse backgrounds of students served.
Support students with disabilities in a general education setting.
Support and differentiate learning for second language learners.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment
As negotiated with the Lynn School Committee and Lynn Teachers Union.
180 days per year.
