Position Summary
The Mobile Heavy Equipment & Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing advanced maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy truck, construction, and diesel powered equipment in both shop and field environments. This role executes all levels of corrective and preventive maintenance with minimal supervision and ensures mission readiness of NSW ground assets. The mechanic documents all maintenance actions in the Fleet Focus system and supports expeditionary and contingency maintenance requirements as directed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform all levels of maintenance on heavy trucks, CESE, and diesel equipment
Diagnose and repair suspension, steering, brakes, drivetrain, and powertrain systems
Conduct tire mounting, balancing, and replacement
Perform welding, metal work, and minor fabrication
Support field and expeditionary maintenance operations
Operate Government vehicles in the performance of maintenance duties
Document labor, parts, and repairs in Fleet Focus
Follow OEM guidance, NAVFAC P300/P480, and NSW maintenance standards
Support surge and contingency maintenance requirements
Required Qualifications
U.S. citizen
Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance
Ability to obtain installation access credentials
Must have a valid driver’s license (Commercial driver’s license (CDL) where vehicles exceed 26,000 lbs GVW preferred)
Minimum 6 years as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic
Experience with OEM dealerships, commercial fleet shops, or military intermediate level maintenance facilities
Ability to independently diagnose and repair heavy equipment and diesel systems
Proficiency using Asset Works Fleet Focus or similar maintenance management systems
ASE certification in diesel engines plus at least two heavy truck categories (e.g., brakes, drivetrain, suspension, electrical, HVAC, preventive maintenance)
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work in Government facilities and controlled areas
Compliance with drug-free workforce requirements
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
Standing, bending, kneeling, climbing on equipment
Work in shop, motor pool, and field environments
Exposure to noise, fuels, lubricants, exhaust, and outdoor conditions
Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk, listen, and write. The employee frequently is required to use foot/ankle motions, hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
