Job Description
Position Summary
The Assistant Boys Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach in all aspects of the basketball program. This role focuses on player development, practice and game preparation, and fostering a positive, disciplined, and team‑oriented environment that promotes both athletic and academic success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Support
Assist the Head Coach in planning and conducting practices, games, and team activities
Help reinforce team rules, expectations, and culture
Support program alignment across grade levels and feeder systems
Coaching & Player Development
Teach and reinforce basketball fundamentals, skills, and strategies
Work with individuals and small groups to improve player performance
Assist with strength, conditioning, and skill development activities
Encourage sportsmanship, teamwork, and accountability
Game Responsibilities
Assist with game preparation, scouting, and strategy implementation
Support in‑game coaching duties as assigned by the Head Coach
Help supervise student‑athletes during contests and travel
Student‑Athlete Support
Promote academic success and monitor student‑athlete eligibility
Build positive relationships with players and serve as a role model
Encourage leadership, character development, and respect
Program Operations
Assist with equipment management, setup, and facility organization
Help with supervision of locker rooms, practices, and team events
Ensure compliance with school, conference, and state regulations
Communication
Maintain effective communication with the Head Coach, players, and staff
Interact positively with parents and community members as appropriate
Support team meetings, parent communication, and program promotion
Qualifications
Previous playing or coaching experience preferred
Knowledge of basketball fundamentals and strategies
Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
Ability to work collaboratively under the direction of the Head Coach
Must meet all state and district coaching certification requirements
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
Work Environment
Requires evening and weekend hours during the season
Travel for away games and tournaments
Possible involvement in off‑season workouts, camps, and open gyms
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director based on coaching effectiveness, professionalism, communication, and support of the overall program.
