Position Overview
Marine Diesel Mechanic (Heavy Equipment Mechanic) – Eglin Air Force Base, FL.
The role involves analyzing malfunctions and repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining diesel engines and generators onboard a variety of seafaring vessels, including gasoline propulsion systems. The mechanic must understand marine vessel systems, operate and maintain vessels up to 65 ft, and work effectively within a team to resolve issues.
Key Responsibilities
Inspect and operate machines or equipment to diagnose issues that require repair, using pneumatic tools and hand tools.
Analyze malfunctions and repair, rebuild, and maintain diesel engines, generators, and vessels with gasoline propulsion systems.
Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges.
Operate and maintain a variety of marine vessels up to 65 ft, including outboard‑powered gasoline boats.
Perform work in accordance with commercial and local accepted trade practices, marine repair manuals, and/or technical orders.
Clean and maintain vessels and the boat shop.
Assist others as needed to assemble and disassemble equipment.
Repair and service vessels using a strong knowledge of tools and equipment.
Work Conditions
Work performed both indoors and outdoors in all seasons.
Outdoor duties may be performed on shore or afloat on even or uneven surfaces, which may be dry or wet.
Work distribution: 45% standing, 25% walking, 20% sitting, 5% reaching, 5% lifting.
Ability to work in a seaborne environment with shift work at remote locations and occasional overnight assignments.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs unassisted.
Travel to remote working locations and routine deployments on support and target vessels may be required.
Overtime may be required to support mission objectives.
Education / Experience / Skills
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Specialized training acquired through vocational or formal military school in a similar field.
Five years’ experience in a relevant field with similar duties.
Knowledge and skills to operate various types of equipment; troubleshoot and perform in‑shop and open‑water maintenance on diesel (or gasoline) engines, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems associated with them.
Good working knowledge of onboard systems—diesel and gas engines, generators, electronics, hydraulics, navigation equipment, radar systems.
Knowledge of Coast Guard navigation rules is a plus.
May be required to be trained and certified in the inspection, removal, and handling of hazardous materials/waste such as asbestos, hexavalent chromium, and radioactive gauges.
Small boat handling skills are a plus.
Comfortable in an open‑water environment offshore; not prone to seasickness and able to swim.
General knowledge of tools and equipment needed to repair and service vessels.
U.S. Driver’s License required; must be able to be insured through Company’s vehicle insurance policy while driving work/government/rental vehicles during working hours.
U.S. Citizenship required; must obtain a U.S. DoD Secret Security Clearance prior to hire date and maintain it throughout employment.
All candidates will be required to pass a consumer report and/or consumer investigation to include SSN, driver record, and criminal background investigation.
Must pass a pre‑employment physical that includes drug screen, vision & hearing testing, medical condition certification, and back X‑ray.
