POSITION TITLE:
Counselor – Elementary
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Principal
JOB CLASSIFICATION:
Certified position (189 Days, FLSA Status: Exempt)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Minimum fifth-year certification in school counseling required.
Experience:
Teaching experience preferred; licensed practice in the field beneficial.
JOB SUMMARY:
The School Counselor designs and delivers a comprehensive program, driven by student data, that is preventive in design and developmental in nature. Counselors focus on academic, career, and social/emotional development delivered through direct student interactions such as classroom lessons, small group, and individual consultation; as well as through indirect services to teachers, parents and the school community.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Guidance Curriculum:
Collaboratively develops and provides student lessons that integrate ASCA Student Competencies of academic development and personal/social development and Georgia Career Awareness Activities aligned with the CCRPI.
Individual Student Planning:
Provides developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented programs to address students’ academic and personal needs; meets with students and collaborates with educators on educational and career planning; coordinates ongoing activities for personal goal setting and progress monitoring.
Responsive Services:
Counsels individuals and small groups to address personal and social problems that interfere with learning; assesses and provides services to meet immediate needs.
Indirect Services:
Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, and community resources regarding identified concerns; implements referral and follow‑up processes; schedules workshops on guidance topics per school needs.
System Support and Leadership:
Meets with principals and leadership to examine data and align counseling programs with school plan; provides information to staff; facilitates professional learning; promotes school and district through community relations; attends SST consultations; interprets student data; evaluates programs; manages counseling program activities.
Non-Program Duties:
Other duties under Principal and Supervisor; never exceed 20% of time; do not include disciplinary or compliance tasks.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
Effective communication with staff, parents, students, and community.
Knowledge of all aspects of a comprehensive developmental guidance program including Georgia career awareness activities.
Ability to plan, organize, and implement goal-oriented activities.
Adherence to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
Physical Demands:
Frequent walking, sitting, standing; lifts up to 25 lbs.
Dexterity for writing, computer use.
Occasional bending, stooping, reaching; clear speech and hearing; visual acuity.
Work Environment:
Moderate noise level.
