Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277‑bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has served the Commonwealth since 1870 and includes a new modern facility under construction with a scheduled completion date of 2026. CSH maintains the only maximum‑security treatment facility in the state (111 beds) and offers 166 inpatient beds for individuals in the community and the criminal justice system. Treatment is holistic and individualized, focusing on recovery. Modality options include medication, evidence‑based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, court preparation, and substance use treatment.
Responsibilities
Apply principles and practices of practical nursing and pharmacology.
Use judgment and skills as defined by licensure regulations to provide treatment and care for patients with mental and physical illnesses.
Manage multiple priorities effectively.
Implement a variety of nursing actions and individualized treatment interventions in complex care situations; identify risk indicators to report to a Registered Nurse or physician.
Provide teaching for individuals and groups to promote independence in personal care and daily living.
Accept and provide positive and corrective feedback.
Collaborate, problem‑solve, and negotiate with peers, interdisciplinary team members, and all departments and disciplines.
Utilize effective oral and written communication skills.
Maintain knowledge of pharmacology, psychiatric and physical conditions, and biopsychosocial needs of patients.
Adjust and adapt care to patients’ developmental and cultural needs.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited practical nursing program.
Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
Additional Considerations
Prior experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse or previous direct care work experience in mental health.
