Job Summary
The

Service Plumbing Technician Apprentice

is an entry-level role designed for individuals looking to build a long-term career in commercial plumbing. This position provides hands-on training in service plumbing while also supporting the Drain team to develop a well-rounded understanding of plumbing systems from the ground up (literally and figuratively).

Working under the guidance of experienced plumbers and drain technicians, this role will assist with diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and drainage systems across a variety of commercial environments. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, eager to learn, and committed to delivering high-quality service to clients and teammates alike.

Key Responsibilities

Assist licensed plumbers with service, repair, and maintenance of commercial and residential plumbing systems including water, gas, and sanitary/storm water systems

Support work in mechanical rooms, including exposure to pumps, water heaters, boilers, and hydronic systems

Gain hands-on experience with plumbing materials such as PVC, copper, PEX, cast iron, and steel piping

Gain hands-on experience with basic electrical principles and function as it relates to the plumbing equipment you will support

Learn to interpret basic blueprints in apprenticeship school, system layouts, and service documentation

Enroll in apprenticeship program, maintain passing grades and excellent attendance

Drain Support & Cross-Training

Assist Drain Technicians with cabling, hydro jetting, sewer camera inspections, and line locating

Help diagnose blockages and identify root causes of drainage issues

Perform basic drain cleaning and maintenance under supervision

General Field Responsibilities

Safely use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment

Maintain clean, organized, and safe job sites

Accurately document work performed using company systems (MSI, etc.)

Communicate professionally with team members and clients

Participate in on-call rotation as needed (with training and progression)

Show up ready to work — on time, prepared, and with the right tools/PPE. Regular and predictable attendance is expected in order to meet the requirements of this position

Develop strong safety habits and follow all OSHA and MTech safety standards

Demonstrate a willingness to learn, ask questions, and take direction

Support team productivity and contribute to a positive jobsite culture

Represent MTech with professionalism, integrity, and a service-first mindset

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required

Minimum 18 years of age

Mechanical aptitude and interest in plumbing systems

Willingness to enroll in and complete MTech’s Apprenticeship Program

Strong work ethic and desire to build a career in the trades

Ability to work in physically demanding environments (lifting, kneeling, confined spaces, etc.)

Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Strong communication and teamwork skills

Physical Requirements
This position is a field-based position. Due to the nature of the position, team members may be exposed to working outside and exposed to different weather elements, including cold and hot temperatures. They may also be required to work at heights in this position.

Be able to lift 50 pounds regularly and 75+ pounds occasionally

Be able to lift, pull and push materials and equipment up to 50 pounds regularly and 75+ pounds occasionally to complete assigned job tasks

Have full range of mobility in upper and lower body

Be able to reach overhead, including working with tools overhead

Be able to work a full range of physical activity in various positions, including, but not limited to, stooping, standing, bending over, kneeling and squatting, climbing, walking for extended periods of time

Use hands and arms to: Thread, cut, weld, braze, solder, and assemble pipe and duct work; Operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and other equipment

Capable of hearing at a level or correctable to a level where the person is able to receive detailed information through verbal communication. Must be able to detect alarms and equipment sounds

Vision must also be at a level or correctable level where the person has clarity both in short and long-distance vision

Stand and walk for extended periods

Handle heavy pipe, fittings, valves, tools, duct, hangers, and equipment

Climb ladders, scaffolding, and stairs regularly

Work and walking on uneven surfaces, elevated platforms, and confined areas at times
