Job Summary: At the direction of the principal and in collaboration with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the Literacy Coach builds teachers' capacity in literacy by facilitating job-embedded teacher development and conducting coaching cycles. The Literacy Coach supports building teacher capacity to meet system-wide and local school initiatives to increase student learning in literacy.
What you will do
Champion the framework for MNPS ELA Literacy Instruction and support implementation of the adopted ELA curriculum materials. Collaborate with the school leadership team, use data to set school-wide pedagogical goals, and develop, implement, and monitor the plan to support literacy instruction.
Provide professional development to teachers in research‑based best practices for the adopted curriculum during curriculum and instruction meetings.
Engage teachers and administrators in ongoing analysis of classroom and student‑level data to inform instruction and make programmatic decisions.
Lead Professional Learning Community sessions focused on unit/lesson planning, analyzing student work, rehearsing high‑leverage teaching practices, and analyzing classroom video.
Build capacity of individual teachers through one‑on‑one coaching cycles, including planning, observations, modeling, video‑taping, and reflection.
Provide direct instruction to students as needed—no more than 25% of time—through model practices, interventions, remediation, and diagnostic assessments.
Maintain professionalism by adhering to curriculum framework, engaging in growth, promoting district PD, attending required meetings, documenting coaching, and fostering relationships.
Education Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in reading or with reading coursework (Preferred).
Experience Qualifications
5 years of successful teaching experience (Required).
Highly effective rating (4 or 5) on the most recent evaluation (Required).
Skills and Abilities
Admission to the Metro Nashville Public Schools K‑12 Literacy Coach Pool.
Demonstrated use of instructional technology to enhance instruction; proficiency in instructional technologies.
Submission of a comprehensive lesson plan or video showcasing a Tier 1 ELA or literacy lesson; or a comprehensive coaching plan or video showcasing a conference.
Submission of three letters of reference from current principal, colleague, and a teacher supported.
Mandatory attendance at the summer MNPS Literacy Coach Institute training.
Strong background in literacy instruction.
