Coastal Stewards – Seasonal Positions 2026
The Town is seeking dedicated individuals to aid in the protection of the Threatened and Endangered species with the Township.
Perform daily monitoring and management activities for breeding piping plovers, terns, and American oystercatchers, including: habitat delineation, nest location, nest protection, chick monitoring, and data entry;
Assist with the collection of data for the Long Island Colonial Waterbird Survey;
Install, maintain, and remove symbolic fencing, predator enclosures, and signage used to protect breeding and migratory shorebirds as well as other sensitive barrier beach species such as seabeach amaranth;
Educate the public about shorebird and barrier beach ecology;
The ability to identify shorebirds by sight and sound;
Other tasks and duties as required.
Qualifications that we look for include:
Previous field experience is desirable but not required;
The ability to work closely with other staff and the public;
Coursework in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, environmental science, or related field is desirable;
Prior knowledge and interest in birds and a strong foundation in shorebird identification skills is desirable;
The ability to work outdoors daily, and at times, under rigorous conditions;
The ability to perform physically strenuous duties, such as hiking long distances on the beach (up to 7 miles);
Applicant must have a valid driver’s license;
The ability to lift/carry 50 pounds;
The ability to work most weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (depending upon wildlife and weather).
Positions run between April & September
Up to 40 hours per week
(Must be able to commit to a regular work schedule)
